Regarding carry on's some carry on's in the duffel form factor require a 12" (30.5 cm) clearance to fit easily!

If you make it 13" clearance the vast majority of bags will fit under there!

But for maximum convenience I recommend you invest in one of these luggage racks: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden...8,512&recidx=0

Makes it easy for the guests to reach their stuff without having to bend down all the way to the floor!
Thanks so much for the help! I do have that exact luggage rack for easy unpacking, but the idea is to have someplace out of the way to store suitcases after they're unpacked and for the duration of their stay. Most of our guests (and us) stay for a minimum of 2-3 weeks and many for 2-3 months at a time. I just thought it would be a good thing to be able to shove suitcases under the bed so they weren't taking up valuable closet or floor space. The luggage rack hangs on a hook in the closet when it's not in use.

Seems so far like 13" is the starting point for now.
