Mid March (end of high season and before the extreme hot season in April-May) should be fine at most of the beaches in Phuket - however caution is always needed regardless of the season. I'm not sure about the seasons in Koh Samui but something tells me that it may be the rainy season - you need to look into this when deciding between Koh Samui and Phuket.

Just to let you know, in March at Koh Samui, the rainy season is over and it starts to get hot.

Another Phuket rule change: Negative COVID test results must be issued in past 72 hours

The new rule initially will be in effect for only nine days, from this Sunday (July 25) through to Aug 2.

However, The Phuket News notes that it may be extended before Aug 2 arrives.

The current rule, introduced only on Tuesday (July 20), requires any arrivals from anywhere in the country to present negative test results for COVID-19 issued within seven days of arriving in order to be allowed onto the island.

Bangkok Airways and Nok resume two flights from Phuket

Bangkok Airways resumed flights between Phuket and Samui Island in Surat Thani province, while Nok Air resumed its flights between Phuket and U-Tapao airport in Chonburi.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand urged airlines to carefully check documents of foreigners visiting Thailand under the Phuket Sandbox scheme before issuing them tickets.

Phuket medical staff embark on third vaccine booster drive

The start of the booster-shot campaign came after Dr Chalermpong stated on Wednesday (July 21) that around 7,000 medical personnel would receive their additional jab by the end of the week. The vaccine being administered is AstraZeneca.
The vaccination drive will soon extend to a further nine hospitals on the island including the Public Health Office and the Tambon Health Promoting Hospital.

Almost 100% of medical personnel in Phuket have received two doses of the Sinovac vaccine since the initial drive began in April but will now start receiving their third shot to boost immunity.

Body of man who fell at Sarasin Bridge after entry denial found

Sutep Sae Man, 42, was originally from Chiang Mai but had been working in Phuket as a tour guide. He had been denied entry to the island last Thursday (July 22) and fell into the water under the bridge shortly afterwards.

Mr Sutep had been denied entry at the Phuket Check Point on Thursday because he had a Chiang Mai address listed on his ID card.

A witness, 53-year-old Niaw Sae-ong, said she saw Mr Sutep walk down to the foot of the bridge to do something, but then he slipped and fell into the water. He shouted for help twice, Ms Niaw said, although she was unable to assist him as she could not swim.

Phuket Opinion: A storm is brewing

PHUKET: The relief and financial support measures for employees and businesses suffering from lockdown measures in the ‘dark red’ COVID high risk areas have already been announced in a move that snubs the rest of the country.

Thirty new cases yesterday in Phuket (28 in genpop, 2 in the box), so 80 cases in four days, and approaching the 90/week threshold.

Phuket officials have redefined the meaning of a "Week".

Phuket infections continue to climb, another COVID death marked

PHUKET: The Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO) has reported 28 new local infections on the island for yesterday (July 25), bringing the total number of local infections in Phuket for the past seven days to 84. The latest daily COVID report also marks one new death attributed to COVID-19, but provides no further details.

However, the PPHO yesterday confirmed that it is not counting the number of infections according to seven continuous days. Instead it is counting the number of infections according to defined weeks. As such, the method of counting allows for an excess of 90 infections within seven days without being recognised by Phuket officials.

And more new rules...

Phuket Tourism Experiment Risks Suspension as Covid Cases Surge

A flareup in coronavirus cases in Phuket, Thailand’s first tourism hotspot to waive quarantine for vaccinated foreign visitors, is threatening to scuttle the experiment seen as a model for other tourism-reliant nations to reopen borders.

The resort island reported 125 new Covid-19 cases during the week ending July 27, higher than the government-set threshold of 90 weekly cases that could trigger a temporary suspension of the program. In response, local authorities closed public schools and shopping malls and banned gatherings of more than 100 people from Tuesday to stem the virus from spreading further.

The majority of new cases were among local residents, and all the high-risk contacts on the island have been isolated to prevent further spread, officials said. Only 26 vaccinated visitors out of the more than 11,800 have tested positive for the virus since the so-called Phuket Sandbox was launched on July 1, they said.
