Getting off the Plane in HKG?
I am booked on the return part of a star alliance award, and routing has to be BKK-TPE. There is one flight a day that stops in HKG, which is my ultimate destination. Is there any way I can get off the plane and stay in HKG, or will I need to go to TPE, and fly back to HKG? Will checked bags make the difference?

With no checked bags there is no problems walking through immigration in HKG.
Be kind enough to let the ground staff know as they will be calling for you upon re-boarding.....
With checked baggage you would need to persuade the check-in staff at BKK to let you check them to HKG only very doubtfull IMHO.
Why do you not route your ticket with a stopover in HKG using that flight, then a later HKG-TPE flight that you then will not use ?

Unfortunately, I have a stop over in SIN from TPE-BKK, so a *A award won't allow one on the return. This is the best option I could think of. Using your advice, just have to find a way to do this trip carry-on...

Be careful the system does not cancel your ticket if you do get off in HKG, I can give you lots of nice places to go to in TPE if you have time there. Just email or PM me.

Since HKG-TPE is shorter than any other flight segment it should be OK. There are usually rules preventing an open jaw from being longer than other flight segments:
"Legal open jaws (open jaw length shorter than flown flight segment length)are permitted."
TPE (2504'40"N 12113'58"E) SIN (0121'21"N 10359'15"E) 1996 mi
SIN (0121'21"N 10359'15"E) BKK (1354'45"N 10036'24"E) 893 mi
BKK (1354'45"N 10036'24"E) HKG (2218'32"N 11354'53"E) 1047 mi
HKG (2218'32"N 11354'53"E) TPE (2504'40"N 12113'58"E) 501 mi

Not sure if you knew you would be getting off in HKG or if this is a changed plan. Could have been booked with an open jaw and made your life easier. Obviously these suggestions for open jaw won't help you now since they don't allow changes to Star rewards with UA Mileage Plus either do they?

On *A award with NH points you are allowed max 4 stopovers (more than 24 hours) in addition to destination but none in country of origin and never twice in same city (except for transit - less than 24 hours).

Actually, when I was making the booking, I asked for the open jaw possibility as I don't need to return to TPE. According to UA, it isn't allowed. Must be an RT, thus the return to TPE. So I figured I could hopefully get off the plane in HKG, and if not, it would be cheaper to use the free ticket to get there and book another one from TPE-HKG, then simply booking BKK-HKG and forfeiting that additional free segment. Does anyone know whether TG might have a shipping service, where I could send my bag separately so as not to have checked bags and get off the plane? Or, as my award is a business class ticket, if I could buy a y class ticket to HKG for my bag, and use the biz class seat for myself?

It's too bad you got a UA agent that doesn't know their own rules on open jaws:
"Open jaw: Legal open jaws (open jaw length shorter than flown flight segment length) are permitted. No stopovers are permitted."
also appears on UA's star alliance reward chart at:
http://www.united.com/ual/asset/Star...d_chart_v2.pdf
You might phone UA back and ask them to change this based on the incorrect info provided by the agent . . .
Sorry can't help with the other question. Good luck!

It seems to me that pod is using an UA award. For UA * awards, you could have a stopover, or an open jaw, not both. pod cannot have an open jaw as he has a stopover already. For TG * awards, you could have a stopover each way, thus would not have been a problem. I guess it would have been less confusing if this was posted on the UA forum.
I don't have a solution. I doubt you will be able to check in with two different tickets in different cabins to different destinations. You may have to go to TPE then fly back.
