Downtown Fort Worth

Travelling to Fort Worth for the first time. Staying at the Sheraton on Commerce St. Looking for any tips as to walkable places: Convenience Stores; Bars; Casual Restaurants. Only there 2 days, so I just want comfortable places to grab a bite to eat, drinks and maybe a store to buy beer. Thanks

If you take about a 20 minute walk there will be lots of stuff on Houston and Main. You might want to see if your hotel has a shuttle available to take you to the area I just mentioned or the stockyards. Billy Bob's is sort of trashy and can be douchey but is still fun. I don't think you'll ever see a "local" there but the stockyards are a pretty good thing to do for a few hours if you are in from out of town.

You will absolutely see locals at Billy Bob's on weekend nights depending on who is playing.

If it's a non-weekend day/night, I agree. Tourist spot only as it's the famous "Billy Bob's." But some of those Texas country concerts can get crowded with people from FW and around the metroplex. I know that as I hava attended a few as a captive soul with my FW-born wife.

The Stockyards is the typical FW stop, and I'm sure there is a shuttle there. Touristy, but still fun with lots of character.

Sundance Square is also a good spot for bars and restaurants. Cantina Laredo is a good Mexican spot right there. The Circle Theater also puts on some good shows. Bass Hall is right there for high-level music. As far as bars - the Flying Saucer, White Elephant and Ginger Man are all good spots.

I don't know when you will be in FW, but the Main Street Arts Festival is coming up, think it's April 18-21 this year. Definitely worth the time to check out if you are there.

Hehe, the Stockyards were what I was referring to about locals... Billy Bob's at the Stockyards HAS gotten some great concerts. I've also gone to see the bull riding with my family that lives in the area - it costs something like $3 and is awesome. Only people that know how to ride bulls allowed - if you want to ride a mechanical bull one of those is in the Stockyards.

Gotcha - and I agree, as a displaced northerner having now lived in Texas a while, watching people ride bulls (and rodeos in general) are pretty fun to watch. I would have dismissed them entirely 10 years ago, but they are fun. Unfortuntaely the OP missed the FW Stock Show a month ago.

Plenty of restaurants and bars 8 or 9 blocks north of your hotel in Sundance Square - Flying Saucer (bar), Ferre, Texas de Brazil, Cantina Laredo, Simply Fondue, and Reata. Del Frisco's steak house, Bob's Steak House and Ruth's Chris are only only 4 or 5 blocks away.

Thanks for all the tips, how about any convenience stores or a place to pick up snacks/beer? Google maps looks like there is not any options around the Sheraton. Also, anyone know how the T & P Tavern is? It looks very close to my hotel, thanks again.....

Problem is, you are about as far from the core of downtown Fort Worth as you can be while still being located downtown. As others have said, the downtown dining and nightlife is 8-10 blocks north of the Sheraton & convention center.

I know there are a few small convenience stores downtown, and in perusing google maps there may be one a block or 2 north of the Sheraton. I think there may also be one around Houston & 6th, which will be on the other side of the convention center and 6ish blocks north of you.

I've been to the T&P Tavern once. It was OK, I just never really think of it when going out.

T&P is a fun only because they have an amazing patio/atrium thing and bags. Their food and specials are only ok. Decent beer list.

If you are there on a Saturday or Wednesday, it might be worth it to find a way to the Rahr Brewery Tour. Cover is $10 cash for three beers and a glass. There's usually live music on Saturdays and food trucks.

You might have booked the worst hotel, or at least the worst hotel location, in Downtown Cowtown. Try and move to anywhere farther east. If you can move to a more central or east side location, then pretty much everything in downtown is walkable. The whole thing is not so big you can't walk and brouse all of it (and for it's size lots of good dining options, with more if you throw in the Stockyards).

Not a half-bad place for short business or conference visit at all, which I assume you are on. Not much true shopping, but a few interesting places to spend a bit of time in (and more if you throw in the Stockyards).

I realized the hotel's distance when I booked, but as I am only in town for about 36 hours, I figured it would work. I don't mind a mile or so walk. I have Google Mapped downtown and it doesn't seem like much in the grocery/convenience store area, otherwise I can just walk to Sundance Square I suppose, thanks for alll the suggestions.....

A bit away but worth the effort (and the short taxi, unless you figure the intricacies of the bus system), the Kimbell and/or the Carter, with a hamburger at Kincaid's have always improved our visits to the city.
