I am beginning to explore other sites to replace FlyerTalk. There is no excuse for this.

I have done just that. I think I mentioned it few month ago in this thread.

Maybe Dick could come to this forum and explain the issue?

FT will still be my favorite site, but now I won't be able to keep up with changes in my favorite threads.

As far as I know, only forum updates are not received by some members. Are you saying that you are not receiving threads updates also?

That is correct. I have not received in a long, long time the nightly forum update emails (they used to come in at 12:03 am on the dot, for years). For the thread updates I've been observing something odd: I only get update emails after I log into FT to view the specific thread. After the update email comes it, if I don't log back into FT to view the thread, I cease to receive the updates.
I'm aware of 'MyFlyertalk', but I find it too cumbersome of a process for me to stay on top of the threads I care about. The nightly update emails were the best for me.

Huh? I'm pretty sure it's all members and it's been going on for what, a year now? It's one of the most egregious examples of poor customer service I can think of. They should just admit that they have no control over this system. They can't even remove this option from the menus! Which they should do as it doesn't work anymore.

I've been receiving email updates of this thread all day:

Thread updates work fine for me, although I only subscribe to a couple of threads by email (this one for testing purposes and the Nome Do thread for planning purposes; otherwise, trying to follow threads by email is FAR too overwhelming).

Forum updates are hit or miss (mostly miss), but I only subscribe to one forum by email (TalkBoard Topics, mostly just to remind me to check it regularly, since it's so far down the list of my subscribed forums in MyFlyerTalk), so I'm not missing much by that being gone. Besides, email updates of forum activity are kind of useless to me, because usually they'll be telling me of activity I already know about because I already visited the forum and read all of the interesting threads well before the email was sent out, so the email is just redundant and old information.


I'm pretty sure it's been that way for as long as I remember. Years ago, before I discovered MyFlyerTalk, I tried to keep up with FT via email (thread and forum updates--an impossible task, IMHO). The thread email updates were always only a single update regardless of the number of posts made in the thread, for as long as I recall.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I was referring to Forum updates. And if you are getting ANY, that would be news in this thread. If you scroll back, a few times this year they got it working for a day or two and a lot of people reported surprised success. But then it quickly stopped. So again, if the operators of this board have any control at all, they should remove this option from the menus. It is clear that they cannot figure out how to get things to work here.

OK. Yes, that's probably what happened to me. I assumed there were more forum updates going out, since the only forum I subscribe to by email is pretty dead and doesn't see activity every day.

This really is ridiculous. I haven't received forum updates for, well, I can't remember how long. I certainly steer people away from FlyerTalk based on this experience, and I barely use the site myself now.

I was aware of it, but didn't understand how useful it was until I clicked on it a few days ago. Wow! I bookmarked it, and when the flood of emails starts rolling in, I'm simply going to add FT to my spam list in gmail and rely solely on "my FT" for updates. I guess you could say that I'm thankful for this latest hiccup.

Don't forget to change your default subscription option in your options to "No email notification."

Then, once email notifications start working again, you shouldn't get a lot of them unless older threads are bumped. For older, long-running threads with continuous activity, you can just go to that thread's subscription (Thread Tools dropdown near the top of the screen > Subscribe to this Thread > change notification type to "No email notification").
