The problem witha gaming locations forum is that you are then faced with the problem I mentioned above in post #28, viz. that it would then become difficult to refuse any request for have to create a forum for just about activity or hobby: golfing destinations, snowboarding destinations, botanical travel, opera travel, architecture travel, etc... That, in turn, would kill the geographical destinations fora.
The case for loyalty schemes and rewards is somewhat stronger, albeit not entirely free from criticism either. FT is not about loyalty schemes in general. It is about those related to travel. There is, of course, the aberration of SPAM. But the existence of SPAM would be a rather poor argument for the creation of any other forum. I accept that there is a loose connection between travel and gaming loyalty schemes, but it is just that: a loose connection. And my fear is, as referred to by Koko further up, a forum that would be nominally about gaming loyalty schemes would probably very quickly become a more general worldwide gaming forum. I have no doubt that there is a case to be made to have somewhere on the internet a forum dedicated to worldwide gaming. What is more questionable is whether that forum should be on FT. |
In case anyone was wondering what has happened to me......
Well, I'm currently away celebrating as part of the OpenSkies/Paris Do, June 19-22. So, while I've been enjoying Paris to the fullest, which included an incredible final dinner at Pershing Hall (specifically Restaurant Pershing)...... unfortunately, I've been unable to throughly read and comment on this thead. Please be patient, as I have quite a few comments, but they are just going to have to wait a day (or so). Best... and thanks to all for participating in the conversation! |
One of the main reasons I support this forum concept is because gaming loyalty program ARE travel related. Many folks take advantage of gaming loyalty programs for the comp rooms & meals while traveling - just as many folks take advantage of hotel loyalty programs to get free rooms & occassionally meals while traveling as well. Most gaming venues with loyalty programs have hotels attached to them. Some (if you're a high enough roller) have air transport as well. I do think that this is a forum which may be stretching FlyerTalks mission slightly, but at the same time, as FlyerTalk grows, it is bound to broaden its horizons & this is one of the forum ideas that I see as a fit for FlyerTalk.

And besides, I can take a free starwood hotel stay in my hometown without traveling or flying anywhere. I can't take a casino comp without traveling. So I'm probably going to vote for the gaming loyalty, despite the conversation-creep that I fully expect to see set in on the forum. |

I love my craps and hold 'em and Lord knows I've given my money to casinos on four continents so there's no moral objection from me.
But as I posted in the private TB forum, the problem I have is more systemic to the structure and organization of FT. Supporters of this forum can say that a gaming destinations forum will be all about comps and casino points, but we all know that, just like the United Mileage Plus forum about the ENTIRE United experience rather than about just points and miles, there WILL be conversation-creep in a gaming destination forum and it will be about everything from the strategies for blackjack to the best strip club in Atlantic City. No amount of moderation will stem that overwhelming tide. Look at DL or NW or HHonors or any forum on FT and the range of questions and comments are all over the place. Casinos offer points, FT is about points and miles so IMHO, FT should have a casino forum. |

That said, unless someone can present a more compelling case not to, I'm planning to vote for the Gaming Loyalty Program forum... |
I would enjoy this forum. Hence, I support the idea.
I only wish I knew my way around casino programs like I do my hotel & airline programs. The infomation would be priceless. |
We aren't gamblers, but, hey, if it makes other people happy, why not?
I voted for it. :) |

I don't have any issues with regard to "conversation-creep," but, IMHO -- if you are going to have issues with "creep" then it must be dealt with ON ALL OF THE FORUMS OF FLYERTALK --- and NOT just selective forums. So, as long as some forums allow unlimited off-topic discussion (BA forum comes to mind as a stellar example... though, I really hate to just point out one, as there are many) --- then there shouldn't be a worry in the world about this happening in any [NEW] forums. If FlyerTalk wants to limit "creep", so be it --- but, that limitation of "creep" should be consistently administered with regard to all forums, otherwise, it is quite a bit disingenuous. Anyway, I'm sorry I haven't been around much over the past week -- but, I'm working on a multi page trip report (started on my blog... and to be posted on FlyerTalk) with regard to my recent Vegas exploits.... and, I have a hugh trip this weekend to Atlantic City.... so, I'm glad folks were able to carry on a very legitimate and cordial discussion with regard to this potential new forum. Cheers to all! and a big THANK YOU to everyone for your comments, thoughts, and support! |
