I do find the point NickB made pretty striking - there are a number of pastimes which could also make the same kind of arguments being made in this thread (skiing, safari/wildlife, hunting for example).
Casinos do! |

I do fully understand your point about how big a business gaming and gaming rewards programs are, trust me, but I am of the opinion it's a slippery slope to start breaking FT down into ever smaller pools of interest based solely on demographics, special interests or activities.
We already do that. Photography, Gay and Lesbian, Women travelers, area restaurants, S.P.A.M., Travel Technology/Products, Cruises, Travel with Children/Pets, Disability, Seniors... One, or more, will not hurt FT in any way. Each addition strengthens us as a community. |

Too bad. |
Out of interest, of those supporting the idea of such a forum, how many of you are already members of a gaming loyalty programme?

FYI Some programs are for one casino and some for chains/groups. I think that some are for both. When I gambled a lot, I could spend 1-2 weeks in Las Vegas and never pay for anything except tips. Air, room, food, shows, fights etc. Now, I do not gamble as much, or for as much money, but I do OK. |

Duh yourself  Most of those mentioned forums fairly new and I opposed creating them as well for exactly the same reasons as it's MHO, which I understood I was entitled to BTW, breaking FT down into further small pools weakens not strengthens us as a community.

In your opinion. You say it like it's a given like gravity and nobody should bother even holding a differing opinion.
Others will make their own opinions. That is why we are a COMMUNITY. We all speak for ourselves! We learn and grow based on what others offer.

But as I posted in the private TB forum, the problem I have is more systemic to the structure and organization of FT. Supporters of this forum can say that a gaming destinations forum will be all about comps and casino points, but we all know that, just like the United Mileage Plus forum about the ENTIRE United experience rather than about just points and miles, there WILL be conversation-creep in a gaming destination forum and it will be about everything from the strategies for blackjack to the best strip club in Atlantic City. *snipped*l. To be honest, I can also see where it goes from where are the best comps, to well, the gaming conditions for this game/slot is the best, to how should I play this video poker to maximize my return and therefore get comps/rewards from this program. tough call. The forum will definitely won't be just about comps/reward points despite any initial intentions. |
I'm against changing the original premise of BK's starting thread from worldwide gaming locations to only loyalty schemes and rewards. Using LAS as an example, Harrahs now has taken over the loyalty programs of the hotels that were purchased from Hilton, ie., Caesars Emperors Club, and the Park Place connection involving Ballys, Paris, Flamingo, etc. and also including Caesars. MGM has merged their hotels into one club card. So all the many at one time different programs have shrunk over the years into just a few predominent ones and a couple of individual programs. By limiting the new forum to only loyalty casino rewards, you've shrunk what I see as the original thinking of BK's post. Yes, those programs should also be included, but to not include worldwide gaming destinations in the forum ("other worldwide gaming destinations, NOT Las Vegas") severely limits the input and questions that might be brought up on the forum. And what's wrong if someone asks about strategy tips for craps or blackjack or slots at a particular casino? Don't some casinos in the Caribbean or Europe or elsewhere use different rules then in N.A.? Even casinos in different areas of N.A. (Reno, LV, AC) have slightly different variations of known games. Better to know in advance then find out the hard way after you've sat down to play.
BTW, I could have put this in the Canada Forum but it probably wouldn't have been noticed as much as if it had been in the newly proposed worldwide gaming forum. Noticed on local TV up here last night that the Casino Windsor (across the river from Detroit) had a grand "reopening" as the new Caesars Windsor. Renovations went on for over a year, and they now have two towers (Forum and Augustus towers) and rates as high as Caesars LV. Using the Harrahs calendar, I found some lower rates in the fall. Be aware, though, that although the hotel rooms can be either smoking or non, the casino itself is non-smoking as per Ontario laws. It's about a three and a quarter hour drive from TO, and we haven't been there since Harrahs took it over, so if anyone happens to be in the area, I'd appreciate hearing about the new layout. Although.....where would they put the reply??? In answer to an earlier question, we have two large stacks of players cards, each about four decks thick. Many from the Vegas programs now merged into others, some from casino hotels no longer in existance, and some from the casinos here in Ontario (although our Casino Windsor card is now replaced by the Harrahs Total Rewards card). And I recently found my old Playboy Club key, which I used at the Playboy Club in London in 1968, the first time I played blackjack in a casino. Probably should shred the unuseable cards. bj-21. |

The case for loyalty schemes and rewards is somewhat stronger, albeit not entirely free from criticism either. FT is not about loyalty schemes in general. It is about those related to travel. There is, of course, the aberration of SPAM. But the existence of SPAM would be a rather poor argument for the creation of any other forum. I accept that there is a loose connection between travel and gaming loyalty schemes, but it is just that: a loose connection. And my fear is, as referred to by Koko further up, a forum that would be nominally about gaming loyalty schemes would probably very quickly become a more general worldwide gaming forum. I have no doubt that there is a case to be made to have somewhere on the internet a forum dedicated to worldwide gaming. What is more questionable is whether that forum should be on FT. |
