Thank you. good news. starting from next year i will start using more points than paying cash. I strongly believe that a higher level than platinum will be introduced.

No. Despite the "sky is falling" mentality, I don't see that this is going to significantly swell the ranks of Platinum members of SPG. Can you provide something substantive to support that it will?

If anything, it'll just make it easier for current Platinum members to requalify, but I'd bet most that do are over by more than the number of award stays they'd use, anyway. Perhaps they requal EARLIER, but since they're already Platinum, what would that matter?

So, no, I can't see why there's need for a level above Platinum given the current qualification requirements.

I like this as long as it doesn't depreciate the platinum benefit. All else being equal, the only pitfall I can see with more plats is more competition for a scarce resource, that being upgraded rooms. But I believe firmly in getting what you pay for, so not getting a suite upgrade does not break my heart. A not hot hot-tub, however....

I do: recognition for extreme loyalty. And what is the harm in an even higher tier to recognize ~0.3% (pulling this number out of my arse... I'm trying to illustrate that it would be a super small, high volume customer, think George Clooney's character in Up in the Air) of SPG's customers that would pull 180 nights a year? I think it would be pretty rad for those that spend at least 1/2 of their life the previous year in a SPG hotel.

FTR: I probably would not qualify for a hypothetical super-platinum, I get plat by hopping from property to property for the first 25 stays, and I only log 50-60 nights a year anyways.

Lurker, as usual, thank you for the heads up. I really could have used this promo 2 years ago, but it may come in handy for next year.

I hope this doesn't inflate number of Platinums even more, but perhaps SPG has plans to raise threshold for Platinum qualification?

I agree. Taking the kids to the beach for a couple of weekends won't do it.

Do you really think people have that many award stays per year that it would have any significant effect?

And why on EARTH would they raise the threshold? 25 stays is one every other week and is in line with other top tier programs.

HHonors Diamond (top tier) is 28 stays, and award stays count
Hyatt Diamond (top tier) is 28 stays, but award stays don't count

It will increase the number of plats. There's very little argument in that it won't: if you have people earning status by cash stays only and now you have people earning status by cash and award stays, you will obviously get more. But, this premise is under the assumption that the number of SPG platinum members has been increasing every year. Perhaps it has decreased over the last few years due to the recession.

I see the following points of issue:
a) if there are in fact "too many" plats
b) to what extent will platinum members increase with this promo
c) if an increase were to occur, what that would do to all plat benefits

Depends. How many people end up short of Platinum each year by a number smaller than the number of award stays they use?

Those are the ONLY ones that will hit Platinum.

Considering that Gold is 10 stays and Platinum is 25, we're talking a delta of 15 stays. There's no way to know (without having inside Starwood information) how many people are Gold that would be Platinum if award stays counted, but I'd guess it's very, very low compared to the number of folks who will make Gold status based on award stays counting.
