The key making system and room management system are usually not linked. Check in agent needs to manually type in room number to key making system. A typo can easily cause this issue. Yes, happened to me from time to time. Sometimes, the key simply won't work as the clerk keyed to wrong room number but wrote down the correct room number.

Obviously not the issue here... Room number came from the reservation system (which should have flagged the room as occupied) and the agent was just following directions in making a key for the same room.

Now if the key was made using the next sequence number, the current occupant would be locked out next time trying to enter the room. That's why they ask if you need another key if you lost your previous key(s) so they can invalidate the old ones or just issue a copy of what you had.

I walk in a step, notice all this and as soon as it registered, I got the heck out of there. I think the person was in the bathroom. It was a tad freaky. I ran down the hallway.

I go downstairs. Tell the front desk agent. She gives me a new key and I go up to that room and there is a small-sized refrigerator sitting in the middle of the Room.

Third room was OK. Not my day.

Moral... Use the latch.
Sounds like your room was switched before arrival and the key packet information was not updated to reflect your new room. Seems the front desk agent did not pay attention and make sure the room number on your reservation matched your information on the key packet.

Typically elite level guests, like myself as a gold member, already have keys made.

In this case, I reserved the room the same day as arrival. So, the key was not pre-made. While I was there she searched the system for an empty room on the club floor... Ends up there was a squatter in there. Funny as she rechecked the system and said no one should be in there. Thank God the dude was not naked when I walked in.

He wrongly assumed that she was the platinum amenity and has the black eye to prove it.

Had it also some times.

The last one was really bad for the other people, because I checked in at 2am and entered the occupied room in the middle of the night.

Who is the squatter here? Presumably the dude already staying in the room was assigned to that room by the hotel and given a key to it. Why blame the victim?

I almost had this happen but it was caught in a rather BS manner I thought. Was checking in at a holiday inn at around 1am and the night manager was finding my room. It seemed they had problems identifying what was empty so he gave me a room key and said hold on, dialed a number on speaker phone, someone picked up sleepily then he hung up and said sorry that one is dirty let me find you another. Rather stupid way to do things i thought but at least i didn't walk in on someone sleeping.

Wow, this is just horrible - shows you how 'professional' the staff/manager in that hotel is...

Only had that happen once some years ago, at a Ritz Carlton of all hotels. Go up with my bags, key doesn't work. Go back down, get another key made, go back up, walk in the room and luggage on the bed, no one in there. Go back down again and front desk manager is there this time, says he'll take of it immediately. Go back up to a different room, no one in that one, but it was a very nice upgrade to an executive suite for my troubles....

I've had this happen 3 times. Most memorable was at a Hilton in Toronto. Bellman opened door and turned on light and I was treated to watching a couple going at it on top of the bed - 3D porn.

They scrambled for the sheets, the bellman apologized but I thought I should get a chair and watch - like in the clubs in Amsterdam or Germany.

Ended up with the living room portion of a suite and a fold out sofa - that sucked.

Front desk gave me a key to someone else's room. Twice.

I wish to rant about a recent harrowing experience (2 experiences, really).

I'm sure this topic has already been initiated somewhere in the Starwood forums. Could someone please direct me to that thread?

Thanks kindly.
