United *A and Thai-help needed
I am new to the FF world. Most work travel is by car or WN.
I have a ton of Marriott points that I am going to convert to a 7 night stay and 175k United Miles.
What is the procedure for using these on a Thai award ticket?
Do I simply call United (after the miles post) and they search for Thai award availabilty?
I am looking for business class on the JFK-BKK non stop next year some time.
Thanks for and info and advice.

Yes. The place that you would be needing to call would be UA once your miles post. Just give them an idea of what dates you're looking for and they should find some spots for you on the JFK-BKK sectors on TG.
Also, if you're not constrained by time and you're only looking for one ticket, perhaps you may be interested in knowing that you can travel down to SE Asia via Europe. It's 20k more (90 vs 110). Then again, if you're willing to spend a little more time detouring, why not go an additional 10k more and fly F to BKK. Take NH to NRT, then connect to TG to BKK. Sound good? Send me a PM if you're interested in more ideas.

And if you've never flown on other airlines, why not do a mix and try a selection of carriers eg THAI, SINGAPORE, ALL NIPPON, etc to asia and back. You can also connect to those gateways eg LAX, SFO, JFK, EWR using UA or US.

The Singapore and Thai option do not offer F-its mostly business. Singapore offers F through Frankfurt but its more miles and I understand that its very difficult to get.

So, the real question is...
If I look to book 300-330 days out, how easy/hard to get the flights I want on ANA and Thai in F?
I was just looking for some comments from others that may have booked these in the past.
The day of the week for the outbound is pretty flexible. After arriving in BKK, we will be flying to Chiang Mai for 3 nights then HKT for 7 nights-I am buying these tix separate.

Last year I flew in business class on Thai flt. #791 nonstop from JFK-BKK since there was no F cabin on that plane. The seat was quite comfortable and the food & service was good too. Had no problem getting an award ticket many months out but I was traveling solo.
If you transit in BKK you can book your award ticket all the way through on Thai to CNX or HKT. that will save you some baht. Then stop in Bangkok on the return if you like.
As long as you are flexible with your travel dates it should not be difficult to get seats on the carriers of your preference. Having that flexibility with dates and routing is the key. Let us know what you find.

Example- Have your award take you to CNX (not BKK). You can structure it something like this...
JFK-BKK-CNX, hang out in Chiang Mai for a few days
CNX-BKK, free stopover in Bangkok for however many days. From this point you can buy your r/t ticket to Phuket.
BKK-JFK, continuation of your return ticket.
Just a thought.

This is a strong possibility. We flew PE on that flight in June. I would do the Business Class and save the miles but the SO is excited about the F possibilities trans-pac. That would be a first for us.

Singapore
1 more question on this thread. How successful has anyone been getting Singapore Bus Class out of LAX on the 777?
The product is being upgraded next year and looks very inviting.
I know FC is almost impossible on Singapore.
Thanks!
EDIT: I meant SFO.

SORRY-I meant SFO
Here's the link I was looking at. Our trip will probably be in early 2008.
