I'll be interested to see if others have conflicting information, but my understanding is that you can't upgrade or bump up an award ticket across classes (economy to first domestic, or economy to business / business to first international) by any means.
However, since the gate/kiosk pay method generates revenue for UAL, they might have a different policy for that. Does anyone know?

UA SWU on LH
Since LH will only take paper SWUs, and can only clear UGs at the gate...if there is no UG available, what happens to the unused SWU?
Do I return it to UA and it gets converted back to an electronic SWU? If so, does the expiration date revert back to the original date or does the expiration change to 12 mos from the redeposit date?

No JRO?
Is it better for me to take more flights and spend over 30 hours in the air on Star Alliance flights because I'm *G trying to get to JRO (which doesn't even show up on Star Alliance's or United's website as a valid airport... which is confusing) or to suck it up and take the much much easier ONE STOP flight from JFK to JRO on Delta/KLM and just forgo the miles and the possible upgrades etc?

TG "I" Inventory--Where to Find
Apologies if this has been answered previously (I did a search and could not find the answer). I'd like to use UA miles to upgrade from PE to J on TG. According, to KVS, the correct upgrade booking class on TG to do this is "I". Does anyone know the best method to search for I class on TG? As far as I can tell, neither EF nor KVS provide this inventory using any of their search methods.
Also, in people's experience, are these kinds of upgrades relatively easy to get on the LAX-BKK sector, or are they virtually non-existent unless booked a year in advance?

Cutoff for Mileage Upgrade on *A?
I haven't been able to find the answer to the following question anywhere: When is the last possible chance to upgrade an eligible fare using miles on a *A carrier? I know you can't wait list. But can you check with your mileage program (in my case UA) while sitting at the gate of the *A airline? Or is there a cutoff point after which no upgrade is possible (other than upsell at checkin). My specific question refers to upgrading on B class AC using MP miles, but I would be interested if there is a general policy.

Requesting a Star Alliance Upgrade Award
Requests can be made after you have purchased your ticket, but must be made at least 24 hours prior to departure to allow for the partner carrier to respond to the upgrade request
