Round the world in 8 days

I'd like to do the following itinerary (business class) :
June 8th Manchester-Seoul
June 12th Seoul-Atlanta
June 15th Atlanta-Manchester

I considered a RTW ticket, but I seem to get caught out by the 10-days minimum outside Europe rule.

Any suggestions how I could save some money? (United web site is quoting $10310)

A Star RTW won't work for a simple reason - no availability in D! The only way to do MAN-ICN is via FRA on LH - and it's C0 D0

star would be alright in economy..is H..but the 10 rule will stuff you..ive been endlessly communicating with UA about this and my latest reply is thus:
Please contact our International reservations to verify that your ticket
in booked in the qualifying classes of service to receive the bonus
miles for this promotion. The telephone number is 1-800-538-2929. The
qualifying classes are:

United Classes F, P, Y, C, B, M, or H
Star Alliance everything except A or D class

At least two segments must be Intercontinental.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Although I would prefer to use Star, I'm open to suggestions of other sources of RTW tickets. Any ideas? (SkyTeam on AF/KE/DL possibly?)

(Maybe I'm asking this in the wrong place).

You can also fly MAN-SIN-ICN on SQ or MAN-LHR/CPH/FRA-BKK-ICN on BD,SK,LH or TG.

Where did you get this from? There is availability according to the LH website.

My travel agent thinks the 10-day rule isn't applied in practice.

My current thinking is
MAN-FRA-ICN (LH)
ICN-YVR-DEN-ATL (AC)
ATL-IAD (UA, fly wife to Washington for the weekend using BD miles)
IAD-MAN (BD)

How can I squeeze in a fifth airline? I can't find sensible connections via BKK.
Anything via NRT maybe?

The 10 day rule can be waived by mostagents if they have a reasonable relationship with the airline that tickets. I've had it done. It's not one of those "steadfast" rules. Basically if the agent can ticket it, or the airline ticketing agent can, there's no real followup on it. The idea with the 10 day rule is to stop business pax buying them for quick meetings and the like.

Interestingly the 10 day rule has been dropped ex-aus for several years on all but the LITE fares. I've done many Star RTW's in < 10 days (yes, crazy!). Incidently, even F/C class RTW's ex-oz do not have the 10 day min, they have a nil min stay.

Re: RTW type tix in business class, you could try a CX/UA combo, UA/SQ combo, UA/EK combo, UA/SA combo which would give you at least some mileage under * alliance.

Galileo - Try to Book it on LH's site for 8th June; it'll say no seats available.

SK don't fly to ICN on the 8th (Do they at all? I don't remember them flying this).

SQ - no availability between SIN & ICN on the 9th June "C0 J0 D0 - SQ16"

You could go via LHR on BD & BKK on TG; this is your only choice, as there is still availability.

10 Day rule isn't always applied in my experience.

Have fun!

Alex

SK has never had a flight to ICN. I ment that you can fly SK to BKK or SIN and then connect with TG or SQ and fly into ICN.

Note that the World Cup is on in Japan and Korea during this time and therefore I believe most of the flights into ICN will be pretty full.

Re: 10 Day rule.

Isn't it possible to add one or two segments to reach 10 days, and just don't use these legs? Of course a transfer and open jaw in Europe must be allowed for the RTW.

(Just some idea - excuse me if this idea has been mentioned before.)

Now this solution is pretty smarmy and I haven't tried pricing it out to see if it will actually work in practice, but the theory is GREAT.

On your third segment, do ATL-LHR and book the last segment on BD for a future date when you can use it on local business. Then just buy a separate BD ticket for your flight home, in fact make it a roundtrip to get you back to LHR - those fares are extremely cheap if you can get one of the GBP40 specials.

Sorry, I reread the "Outside EUROPE" after I typed it out. Shoot first, ...

Have no definite idea about how you can do an ATL-MAN cheap in Biz class

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, the availability on that LH FRA-ICN flight kept coming & going. When I'd finally worked out how to use the route search engine on the *A website, I was stunned how many possible routes there were.

I'm now actually booked as follows :

MAN-CPH-BKK-ICN (SK/TG/TG)
ICN-YVR-DEN-ATL (AC/UA/UA)
ATL-IAD (UA)
IAD-MAN (BD)

I'm flying my wife to ATL & IAD using some BD miles, so we're having a long weekend in Washington. I'm still not quite at 10 days, but I seem to have got away with that.

A final question: According to BD's FF info, they don't give any points for D-class on TG. Is that really correct? Please tell me that other Star carriers do!

IMHO LH's Miles & More program is excellent. For D Class on any *A Carrier you'll get double miles (count as stutus too!). Once you make FTL (*A Silver) you'll get an extra 25% on top of that (So 250% of flown miles) - again all count as status.

Your routing would make you FTL with LH and get you around 60000 to 70000 miles.

Alex
