Agreed. One thing the nation learned in real time on 9-11 was that when someone literally threatens the life of everybody on the plane, you don't go along quietly and hope for a mostly pleasant outcome, you consider yourself deputized.

Back when flying was prohibitively expensive, this sort of thing rarely if ever happened because someone so nuts didn't have their life together enough to earn the money necessary to fly. Now that it's cheap any Wal-Mart shopping trash can fly.

What gets me is not so much that she was smoking in the lav and screwed with the smoke detector..it's the added threat. On an episode of "Airline" there was a pax who was IDB'd for some reason, and just had to add "I hope this plane crashes" while yelling at the ground crew..which got him in cuffs. There was a guy on an Air Canada flight about 15 years ago, while the shock of 9/11 was still fresh, who got caught smoking in the lav and just HAD to add "I have a bomb and you are all going to die!"....that got a fighter escort and an emergency diversion and I would not be surprised if that guy was in Guantanamo to this day. I am not sure why people who have a smaller issue turn it into a full blown SWAT incident all the time by adding something stupid like an empty threat. They all seem to want to do this.
