Sixt agents hate that you can see the inventory in your booked category on the app: most stations deactivate the option. The usual spiel by agents is to pick the rattiest brand to convince you to agree to an upsell (either extra per day for the better car or for silly insurances you don't need). It seems they get incentives for that from their employer. :td:

If i rent a XFAR or an LFAR can I be sure that it's 4WD/AWD ?
I'm planning a trip this winter and will be in need of 4WD/AWD , I've seen on other stations that I can pick an extra that guarantees me 4WD/AWD but not from LAX. I will either fly in to LAX or LAS (Since I might drive up to Colorado, which is not allowed if i pick up in California, and then return at LAX) but neither has that option |
Sixt now has a Denver office. Have you considered flying there, and one-waying to LAX?
|
I was. But then I saw that the prices where about 150$/day extra if I would have one-wayed it to LAX. And I want to go to Vegas, watching Knights play then the day after I'll begin my 7 day road-trip towards Denver with a bunch of stops, any tips on good stops, eg. National Parks is appreciated, along the way then making my way back to LA.
Since I'm planning on stopping at some national parks and since it's winter I guess that I must have AWD and at least All-Weather tires (used to winter driving so that's no problem as long as I have tires for the job :P ) |
Maybe go with a different company then? Is there a particularly compelling reason to use Sixt?
|
It's just that i like Sixt. But I will look at other companies and see what I can find.
I sort of assumed that I pick up a car and the geographical restrictions allow me to drive somewhere where the weather is different, and of course since it's winter and it can snow in CA and NV, the the car should be prepared for that, tires should be all-season tires. But that's maybe not how it works |

In conclusion, the only way I'd go back to this location is for a crazy-cheap rate on a high-end car. They seem to rent a lot of Mercedes, Jags, etc. out of this location, so if you want to drive something fun for a fraction of what Hertz typically charges for their Prestige cars, it might be worth it. But I'd *never* rent a basic midsize/full-size type car here - the act of waiting in the lines kills off any value you get in the form of a slightly lower rate.

it used to be that I’d say you’d likely get a PCAR. These days though, you’ll most likely get an upsell hard sell, be told Plat upgrades are just discretionary, etc. If you push politely but firmly for the next category, you can likely get it but prepare to have to fight for it. I have a reservation at Hertz also at the same total price, which should I go for in your opinion (also thinking about the chances of an upgrade with sixt) ? what are the deposit amounts also for these group cars ? ( sixt=LFAR , hertz = H4 ) Thank you again |

The deposit for an LFAR with Sixt is $500, according to their website, I think. This is a hold they place on your card and release when you return the vehicle. In general, an authorization of a minimum of $200 plus the amount due for the rental will be taken as an authorization against the Credit Card for security purposes. The authorization amount on Premium and Luxury vehicles (PCAR, PFAR, PTAR, LCAR, LDAV, LCAV, LFAR, LFAV, LTAR) is a minimum of $500, |

I'm slightly at a loss here. Are you saying they won't even honor his reservation for an LFAR, and instead are likely to try and throw a PCAR his way instead? That seems odd. I'd understand if they're dragging their feet honoring the automatic upgrade (which seems to be to an XFAR or something exotic), the bait and switch would be the opposite end of that. Last time I rented from LAX they gave me an upgrade without asking, without status (LCAR to XCAR), then again, this was two years ago. I guess as with anything in the rental car business, your mileage may vary.

I'm also curious about what Milestalk said in that situation. Thank you for the answer, any chance you have an info about the deposit amount for Hertz? ( group=H4 , I asked at the herts forum still no reply ) |
Hi,
I plan on renting a Chevrolet Suburban from Sixt in LAX. It's coded as GFAR. Does anyone know if this car is 4WD? I will be driving into Yosemite so I need to make sure it's 4WD. Thanks! |

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the Escalade's in XFAR can have 4WD and Volvo's petrol models are 4WD as standard, at least for the XC60 so i'm guessing that it's the same for the XC90. Not sure about the Mercedes GLS. Of course XFAR is more expensive but to be sure it might be worth it, or just a waste of money... I'm in the same situation as you. I need to pick up at LAS and return in LAX but I will drive in Utah and Colorado in december/january and I will probably get XFAR. At least LFAR, I wan't a premium SUV category. I'm used to driving in snow so nothing unfamiliar but I don't want to risk getting stuck somewhere just save some money I have an LFAR reservation at LAX in about two weeks, if I remember I will get back with what we got here :) |
Thanks a lot xZ4sdDMlSu4aiq63, do let me know what you got on your rental :)
