Free Night Award Top-Off
Not possible as of 12/7/2023 since Marriott removed the internal tool for extensions. Historical information found at the end of this page.
Gifting a Certificate
Points reservations can be gifted to another person, but according to Marriott's terms, certificates earned from a credit card cannot. This means the certificate owner (cardholder) must check-in even if someone else is also listed as a guest on the reservation. In some cases a property has given leeway and allowed just the guest to check-in anyway without the certificate owner present, but it can be risky to depend on this.
Canceling a Free Night Award Reservation
If you cancel a Free Night Award reservation, the FNA certificate may sometimes disappear from your account. It can be re-instated by calling Marriott.
A way to avoid this is the following technique:
Titanium Elites may obtain a Free Night Award worth up to 40,000 points as an annual choice benefit
Nine co-branded credit cards offer an annual free night worth up to 85,000 points:

EXTENDING AN EXPIRING CERTIFICATE:
Before 18 Aug 2018, Chase issued certificates good for specific categories of hotels. Post 18 Aug 2018, all certificates have been converted or will be issued at a specific level of points. SPG AMEX and Ritz Carlton credit cards have also begun to issue certs.
25K points - lower level certificates
35K points - higher level certificates
50K points - luxury level certificates
Marriott will introduce peak and non peak levels for hotels after 1 Jan 2019. Certificates will be capped at the points level where they can be redeemed rather than for a specific category of hotel. Thus, if a hotel is 25K at the non peak level and the peak level is higher, it cannot be booked in the peak level window.
NEW EXTENSION OF CERTIFICATES announced in October 2021:
The expiration date on certificates this year is pushed to 1/31/21.
- When using an FNA, you may spend up to 25,000 points beyond the certificate value, which is called a Top-Off. The difference is paid from your personal points balance.
- If you book a room using Top-Off, and the room price later decreases, you can modify the reservation to rebook the same date and immediately recover the difference in top-off points.
- Other links: Top-Off Discussion, 2021 program updates, and Marriott FAQ
- Between 4/30/22 and late March 2026, the maximum top-off was 15k.

Canceling a Free Night Award Reservation
If you cancel a Free Night Award reservation, the FNA certificate may sometimes disappear from your account. It can be re-instated by calling Marriott.
A way to avoid this is the following technique:
- Before cancelling anything, first modify your existing FNA reservation and select points payment instead, assuming you have enough points to entirely cover the cost. Confirm that change.
- Once complete, the original Free Night Award will be available in your account again for use. Your old reservation will show as being paid with points.
- Now cancel the points reservation to recover your points. (Point reservations are refundable, but as usual check for any special cancelation rules at your property.)
- The certificate expires one year after it is issued. You must complete your stay by the expiration date.
- Can be used for a standard room only.
- Cannot be used for "redemption with cash upgrade" or any points and cash combination
- Cannot be combined with a 3-night award to get a "Stay for 5, Pay for 4" award
- Amex credit card free night certificates are issued 2 months after the anniversary date of the credit card. For example if the Brilliant fee posts 7/1, the certificate is available in your Marriott account on 9/1. Chase FNA certificates can appear much sooner, within 1 week.
- If you made a reservation with a FNA and want to know its expiration date, you can find it by editing the reservation as described at this link.
- If you downgrade the Amex Brilliant to the $95 Amex Bonvoy card, you can still get your anniversary FNA.
- Search for a points booking at an eligible hotel. During the booking process an option appears to use the certificate as a replacement for some of the required points. Click that button and continue the reservation.
- If its more than a 1-night stay, you can also choose the night on which to spend the certificate. It will display a button and price next to each night. You may want to select a specific night if the price varies during your stay.
- Some have had trouble booking certificates from the credit card offer to get 5 free nights (specifically starting in 2020). In that case, try this webpage for booking.
- If you have 2 certificates of different value and try to redeem only one, the Marriott website offers the one expiring first. If that's not what you want, work around this issue by making a dummy booking with that certificate. Then book the real reservation with the desired certificate. Then cancel the dummy. Be sure to pay attention to any cancellation terms since a few properties are more strict than others.
- If the reservation is for someone else, see the note above regarding, Gifting a Certificate. Marriott does not officially allow this.
Titanium Elites may obtain a Free Night Award worth up to 40,000 points as an annual choice benefit
Nine co-branded credit cards offer an annual free night worth up to 85,000 points:
- Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card (formerly Starwood Preferred Guest Luxury Credit Card from American Express) - up to 85K (Second with $60k spend)
- Ritz Carlton Rewards - up to 85K
- Marriott Bonvoy Bevy - up to 50k (with $15k spend)
- Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful - up to 50k (with $15k spend)
- Marriott Bonvoy from American Express (formerly Preferred Guest) - up to 35K
- Marriott Bonvoy Boundless (formerly Rewards Premier Plus) Credit Card - up to 35K
- Marriott Bonvoy Business from American Express (formerly Preferred Guest Business) - up to 35K
- Marriott Rewards Business Premier Plus Credit Card - up to 35K
- Marriott Bonvoy Premier (formerly Rewards Premier) - up to 25K

EXTENDING AN EXPIRING CERTIFICATE:
- A blogger reported that as of 12/7/2023 Marriott removed the internal tool to extend an FNA, so it may or may not still be possible.
- Your best chance for an extension is to call Marriott within 1 month of the expiration and consider having a specific property and date in mind to book. It's not necessary but even without one in mind, pick something you might use and change it later. 1-800-MARRIOT
- Most importantly, have a good reason for needing the extension, like illness or injury.
- If granted, the new expiration date is 1 year from the date of the request. You cannot get a 2nd extension on the same certificate, meaning the maximum life of a certificate is 2 years.
- If not granted, some have luck by calling later a few times.
- In 2022, Marriott seemed to deny all extension requests except a few exceptions such as here, here, and here. They may be allowing some again in 2023.
Before 18 Aug 2018, Chase issued certificates good for specific categories of hotels. Post 18 Aug 2018, all certificates have been converted or will be issued at a specific level of points. SPG AMEX and Ritz Carlton credit cards have also begun to issue certs.

- Free night awards, Suite night awards, and travel certificates will be given a new expiration date of June 30, 2022
- The Marriott Bonvoy app shows the original issue date of your free night certificates. Go to Account -> Free Night Certificates to find the issue date in small print above each certificate. It's unlikely you have a certificate that won't be extended. If you don't see the issue date in the app, you'll have to wait for the actual extension to happen to check the new expiration.
- Expiration of points is paused through December 31, 2022. At that time, your points will only expire if your account has been inactive for at least 24 months
- In March 2022, Marriott will eliminate hotel categories and use variable point pricing for awards. Only a small number will be affected at first, so you won't see an immediate sweep of all properties at once.
- "Starting May 6, members who had a FNA with an original expiration date in 2020, or which will expire before January 2, 2022, as part of their Cobrand Credit Card Benefit, Annual Choice Benefit, promotions or travel package will be able to redeem it through January 3, 2022.
- Please note that FNAs with an original expiration date before 2020 will not be eligible for the additional extension. Members do not need to take any action because the system will automatically update their account with these extensions on May 6, 2021."
The expiration date on certificates this year is pushed to 1/31/21.
- ...Members who currently have an active Free Night Award (FNA) expiring in 2020 as part of their credit card benefit, annual choice benefit, promotions or travel package will be able to use it through January 31, 2021.
- Expiration dates will be updated by the end of April, giving priority to those expiring soonest.
- If yours will expire within just a couple days, contact a Marriott representative here by private message.

I have a current reservation for the night of Dec 31 using my 85,000 point FNA that expires on January 3rd. It is now past the date I can cancel the room with no charge - could have been canceled no later than Dec 26.
Both my husband and I are sick - we keep hoping we will recover sufficiently to use the room, but as of this morning it's not looking hopeful. Before I phone the hotel, I just wondered if there were any options we can request.
First, when I go to the reservation, there seems to be an option to edit the itinerary to another date, but before I try that, does anyone know if that would be possible without charge (seeing as the 'cancel with no charge by' date has passed) and/or whether a new date would still be able to use the FNA? Understanding that the most we'd be able to push it is 2 days since the FNA expires on Jan 3.
If that isn't feasible, does anyone know if we will be able to cancel the room with the hotel, losing the FNA, but not be charged the resort fee and/or parking fee? I can accept that I'll lose the FNA, but there is a $56 resort fee and $43 parking fee that I'd like to not pay. Is it best to call the hotel to cancel or the Marriott central reservation line for this - and would we *only* lose the FNA and not be charged some one-night room rate? It does say that there is an early departure charge of one night's rate, but this is only a one-night stay for which we may need to cancel.
The hotel is sold out since it is NYE so I'm guessing there is a good chance they would be able to sell the room that night.

I would definitely take the approach of trying to move the reservation to the 2nd, for example, whether online or by contacting the hotel directly. Option A is likely to work and Option B is to the hotel's benefit, allowing them to resell the room - possibly at a higher return. There is a good chance that Marriott central reservations will either refuse or mess up the transaction. Good luck.
I'm afraid to click on the Update icon because I don't know if it will take the points, or if it will move the FNA from the existing reservation to the new one.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
EDITED TO UPDATE: After my husband told me that tomorrow is a definite no-go for him (he's been running a fever), I called the hotel. They were super nice and have cancelled our reservation, waiving the fees. Apparently, had I just cancelled outright, there would have been a charge of $223.
I forgot to ask him if there would have been a fee if I had just changed the date, but since he said the FNA would be re-deposited, I accepted the cancellation with fee waiver for now. There is plenty of availability for Jan 2 and Jan 3 for well under the 85,000 FNA value, so if we feel better, we will grab a reservation. I'm guessing it is not worth a call to Marriott to ask to have the FNA extended.

FNA extension is a no go. Lot's of folks have reported trying and I don't recall anyone reporting success. It doesn't matter how good your reason for asking for an extension is with the current Marriott policy. There is zero flexibility. Hope you feel better in time to still use your FNA before it expires.

Just a quick positive note that sometimes it can really work out well to have a close to expiration FNA award tucked away! Once we're into November where I live, seasonal rates kick in and it is seldom possible to use them in my state.
This year, mine were unused and the card renewal fees had already been charged, when I received notification that I had won 2 tickets to a private Benson Boone concert hosted by Visa Live at Kennedy Space Center on Thanksgiving weekend. Very excited about winning tickets - but even the Springhill Suites and Courtyards in that area were running $300-400 a night due to the holiday weekend time period. When I looked at options/rates, one hotel in a less well-known location vs. the beach (in Titusville but on the river and actually the closest hotel to the Space Center) had availability at 47K per night and my expiring FNAs were still valid, set to expire 6 days after the concert. Always happy to pay that $95 annual credit card fee to have a cert or 2 tucked away for opportunities like this.
That hotel turned out to be a nice find as well - easy access to/from the highway and the Space Center, rooftop bar with a view of the launchpads, outdoor seating and firepit with view of the river and surprisingly good food.

Last year I used a 85K Bonvoy Brilliant card Cert to book a 95K room at the MKH using the top up to add 10k to it, but also paying a cash upgrade with the award ($200.00) for a beach front room.
Today doing the same exercise, it won't let me book a 95K room on a stay that requires a cash upgrade portion.
Did the T&C change or was I just lucky before? And I had done this a few times btw.
Thanks for any replies

My desired stay was for a LHR airport hotel, so it was easy to just select another MR property instead. One possible workaround, never tried it, would be to book a cancellable base room at MKH if one is available as a standard redemption with your FNA + topoff if needed. After doing so, call MKH directly and see if they are willing to offer you a cash upgrade to beach front. This would definitely be skirting the system. I have no idea if it would work. YMMV...

You were lucky last time. FNA's only work with standard (or pointsaver) redemptions. FNA's can't be used for any award stay with upgrade (neither cash nor points). I ran into this issue two years ago. In my case my FNA was worth more than the total point cost for the desired redemption with the point upgrade. I thought it was a website bug and called MR customer service. They explained the restriction to me. Wound up booking an alternate property instead. So unless the rules have changed recently, you won't be able to use your FNA for your MKH stay in a Beach Front Room.

- We price nights at 102k so just that you can't use a 85k cert.
- We price it under 100k, but now there is only one room where it can be applied towards.
- That room with a different view, that one is labeled 'points upgrade' so you can't use your cert there either.
....ers.

You forgot 56K and 51K for 40 and 35 point certificates respectively. Usually have to burn those at lower value properties.

(plus, you annoyingly have to also pay the $60 daily resort fee + tax when booking awards, until with Hilton)

After months of watching it, I was able to book a $1,000 hotel in Athens this number for my 85k certificate + 15k in points, a great value!
It always fluctuated between 102-104k points, just out of reach, but yesterday dropped to 100k even

Why does it take so long to get the 85K FNA from AMEX Brilliant compared to Chase branded Marriott cards?

No clue. Weirdly it works in my favor though ... My Brilliant renewal is end of October and I get the certificate around New Year's. And my Ritz renewal is in the end of March so the certificates aren't too far apart.
