Had same problem. Selected upgradable fare in search but one of the flights was not upgradable. Fix, called CS to change flight to correct fare class without any fare change.

Another data point to above. Also using a companion fare, the outbound defaulted to Q class. Had to call in and upfare in order to use the certificates.

Has AS changed how GGU certificates are applied? I applied my GGU certificate to a flight, but it was applied resulting in an upgrade to First Class but the GGU certificate was still in my account as unused. Is AS now using a hybrid of applying the GGU but not deleting it from account until the flight actually completed?

Ive seen the same thing on my account. I have applied online or had a representative apply for me and they never leave my account. Not sure if this is only the case for codes that expire 12/31/2025 but either way, I dont think this is on purpose.

Apparently its a manual process for using 12/31 codes. They are left in there until pulled (sometimes a couple days later).

That's what an agent shared with me tonight.

I have codes I used in October that were never removed, so not accurate.

Fast forward to this week, I had the same issue two days ago (showing 7U, but there is only 1U). I kind of assumed that there was no way there was 7U, so I called in first to confirm. I agree, although - this is super frustrating.
I used to only see this issue when booking with a companion fare (any U1+ would show as upgrade available with companion fare). Now, I'm seeing it all over the place. Expert Flyer will give you an exact count of U space and seems to be accurate

I've seen it too. Doesn't look like anything to me, must've been the wind. Probably best to ignore it.

This is like the digital version of the old paper upgrade cards that you could sometimes use over and over...lol.

I was searching for a DEN–SAN–HNL roundtrip and, on the AS website, dutifully selected “Upgrade Certificate” as the upgrade type and carefully chose upgrade-eligible flights—because I enjoy following instructions.

Naturally, on the final payment screen, the outbound magically transformed into an O fare (upgrade ineligible!). Assuming user error, I repeated the entire process two more times and achieved the exact same result. Despite doing everything correctly, the website helpfully down-fared me anyway.

After consulting a friend who is far more fluent in Alaska’s… creative IT ecosystem, we discovered that this only happens when a companion certificate is attached to the search. The workaround? I ticketed the itinerary with the unwanted downfare, called in to manually upfare it, and then went back online to apply the GGUs.

Moral of the story: trust, but verify—especially when your browser is pointed at alaskaair.com.
I reported this last August so Alaska has been aware of it for a long time.

I ran into the same thing a few days ago. Thanks for posting as this shows that both this and the problem of reservations using companion certificates booking the outbound leg into the wrong fare class have been known to Alaska for months.

2026 codes with wrong expiration date

Overnight, four upgrade certificates showed up in my account (I'm a Million Miler; not bragging, just giving the reason why).

They all have a expiration date of 01/31/2026.

I assume they are supposed to have an expiration date of 01/31/2027 (to align, perhaps, with general status expiration now at the end of January). But either the system or a human entered the wrong end year.

I hope.

Hi -

I saw the same thing in my account the morning. GGUs are now probably tied to the expiration of the program year. Using 12/31 for eligibility and 1/31 for the end of a program period probably bonked the It.

Yep, I've tried to get them to honor the advertised availabilitythey won't. Your best bet is to use Expert Flyer their numbers are accurate.

Maybe we'll get more next month?
