Fast forward to this week, I had the same issue two days ago (showing 7U, but there is only 1U). I kind of assumed that there was no way there was 7U, so I called in first to confirm. I agree, although - this is super frustrating.
I used to only see this issue when booking with a companion fare (any U1+ would show as upgrade available with companion fare). Now, I'm seeing it all over the place. Expert Flyer will give you an exact count of U space and seems to be accurate
