It can be considered understandable where passengers originate in KL (and decide when to head to the airport), perhaps, but not otherwise. What does MH expect their transiting customers to do for the hours before midnight?
Way to annoy your high-value (J or even BSuites) clientele
They should really make an exception for passengers in transit (explicitly with a single ticket, at the very least).

Absolutely asinine decision by MH management (and OW, for that matter) to follow this 6am rule there are many tickets MH sells where transit overnight is required, as in SirTobys case.

A rumour I heard is that the issue isn't so much with the with business class pax but the many Gold and Platinum who attain their status on low yield tickets and take advantage of the access.
There was a case recently with J pax who made a lot of noise on social media. They arrived at 16:30 ish from CNX and wanted to stay until the next morning and travel on MH4. They were denied access and told to come back later and were likely let in after 1 midnight.
The rules have have been updated on te website as well.

The rule is set but they have given themselves room to allow things if feel like it.

If I am on a MH flight (with a TK flight number) in J. What lounge would I be entitled to (i'm *Gold too)
IST-KUL TK
KUL-BNE MH (TK flight number) - Assume MH Lounge will be no issue to access?
BNE-KUL (MH (TK flight number) - Assume the Qantas lounge? or would star ones work?
KUL-IST TK - Could I access the MH lounges on transfer?
Thank you

This is why since than I always try to avoid these cross-alliance codeshare as it's just a nightmare to know what you get or can't.
In this case, I think there could be a chance that the pax will be allowed into the MH lounge since MH is operating the flight (normally on the BP, it's the main operating airline showing up, while I for sure know with a TK operated flight and marketed by MH, one is not allowed in, as I've checked before at KUL just recently).
Cheers!

From their policy at the bottom of the page: https://www.oneworld.com/airport-lounges
I think often the staff at those lounges might not realise the flight was booked through non-OW carrier (i.e. not marketed by OW member) so still allow access if the system accepts it, but if they are being strict, then they could deny access based on their policy.
Members of oneworld airline frequent flyer programmes with the equivalent of oneworld Emerald or Sapphire tier status can use lounges offered by oneworld airlines when departing on any flight marketed and operated by any oneworld member airline, regardless of cabin class being flown (exceptions are noted below).
