It can be considered understandable where passengers originate in KL (and decide when to head to the airport), perhaps, but not otherwise. What does MH expect their transiting customers to do for the hours before midnight?

They should really make an exception for passengers in transit (explicitly with a single ticket, at the very least).
The rule is set but they have given themselves room to allow things if feel like it.
A rumour I heard is that the issue isn't so much with the with business class pax but the many Gold and Platinum who attain their status on low yield tickets and take advantage of the access.
There was a case recently with J pax who made a lot of noise on social media. They arrived at 16:30 ish from CNX and wanted to stay until the next morning and travel on MH4. They were denied access and told to come back later and were likely let in after 1 midnight.
