Liquid in carry on bag limits / LGW / BA

Hi all. Search high and low for this and only find conflicting information - even on gatwick’s faq.

flying BA LGW to MCO shortly and would like to bring some wine with me - but prefer to not check a bag.

new security systems at LGW, and rules now state you can bring through 2L in liquids.

However I cannot find clarity on whether types of liquids are restricted or whether restrictions vary by destination. Examples on the website include water, formula, etc.

so, anyone have recent experience bringing through a bottle or two of wine or spirits in their hand baggage at Gatwick for a BA flight to the USA?

thank you

You can now carry two litres of liquids when travelling through LGW regardless of destination.

i don’t think k it matters whether its shower gel water or wine.

Notwithstanding the hand baggage liquid limits, what you take into the USA will be restricted by customs, not by LGW security procedures.

So, for example, if 2l of booze isn't allowed if it were put into the hold, then it won't be allowed in hand baggage and it's not up to airport security to police that.

LCY was 100mL (though no need to be in a plastic bag) when I went through two weeks ago.

There are two limits the op might face: 1) us bound flights still sometimes have at gate random checks of hand luggage. It doesn’t seem to be all flights anyone but I’ve still seen it a few times earlier this year (unless something has changed very recently?) and I don’t know if they allow liquids 2) even with the new ct scanners “some” liquids do get rejected by the machines certainly at lhr. I’ve had it more than occasionally - with a hot sauce, some vinegar, some perfume (I know I know, the contents of my luggage is varied!!) At times follow up tests lead to late acceptance other times it’s just straight to the bin. So to cut a long story short, I’d take the risk with a fun bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau but certainly not with a 1982 Mouton Rothschild or a Pétrus.

Thanks. V. annoying such different policies at different airports when they have the same scanning capability!

This is temporary. The software updates have now been rolled out, and it's just a training and compliance piece that needs to be finished off. Some airports have relatively high staff turnover and pressures on training availability, so it's not something that can be done overnight in all airports. I would expect all UK airports to be finished in the next 4 months or so. T4 is the only hold up at LHR now.

You are confusing duty free limits with liquid restrictions. 2L of booze is fine, or even more, so long as one declares it upon arrival. The restrictions on booze in the hold relate to highly flammable proofs, that's it. Accordingly, you could fly with 150 proof in the hand baggage, but nothing more than 140 proof in the hold.

Not really the point I was making.

It doesn't matter what the security liquid limits are if you can't take your item into the country you're heading to. So I would firstly check that what I want to travel with is allowed into the country before considering whether I can get it through security.

For example, one can take all the sausages and cheese one likes through security in France but, technically, none of it is allowed into the UK.

I took have lost hot sauce to the FW scanners at LHR. I should have asked for a receipt and requested I pick it up on my return. Didn't think of it at the time.

Can you do that? I doubt it. I thought the choice was bin, or bin - unless you extract yourself from the security check (i.e. go back through the scanner and ask for your bag(s) back and then check the item in.

Not entirely sure, to be honest, but it's got to be worth a try. Those items belong to you so there really ought to be options to prevent them from going into the bin.

I've been given the option to go and check them in if they can't be taken in hand luggage. I'd imagine that would be the same. On your credit card or let it go.

(The item at the time was a dinner knife accidently left in my backpack from lunches at work. Wouldn't know how to check a single little item in (presumably I'd have to check the backpack in) so just told them to throw it away.)

Just bear in mind that not all scanners at Lgw are the new ones. I travel easyJet a lot so mostly north terminal and a few months ago there were still some old ones. I have no idea if you can goto the other scanners if you fail one.
