Wonder if United will pause/defer their Airbus deliveries in order to not pay tariffs, similar to what Delta is doing.

Would be a good question to ask during the earnings call next week.

Good question, I've been wondering myself. United just took delivery of N14528, an A321neo out of Hamburg. '4542, '4543, and '4544 are currently scheduled to come out of Toulouse. The rest of the A321neos that I see scheduled come out of Mobile, AL. Even so, a lot of components (and even the airframes I think) come out of Europe.

And then there are the XLRs.

I suspect the answer on what happens here lies in OMNI land, as well as some understanding of when cash actually changes hands for orders, how / when tariffs get assessed, etc. etc. Selfishly, though, I hope it does not impact UA getting the 321XLRs. The 757 is a great bird, but UA’s are very long in the tooth and susceptible to all sorts of random maintenance issues.

Not just Airbus that would be affected And tariffs are applied when the product is imported, not when the contract has been signed. Im dealing with this mess right now

What happens if an aircraft is leased? Does the tariff apply to a lease?

There is an article on View From the Wing, dated 4/3/2025, stating that Kirby praises the tariff efforts. Anyone else see this article?

I think that a number of people view this as sucking up so that they do not face opposition to a future Jetblue acquisition

That would definitely give them, UAL, Airbus aircraft and pilots, along with Boston.

Obviously subject to OMNI topics and fluidity in the situation was general, but China is halting all Boeing deliveries. Maybe helps UA move up in the order line?

If they really wanted to they could potentially get their hands on a few more NTU MAX frames like they did 2 years back. Although these would require extensive modifications to get them to UA Standards

The frames that United might be interested in speeding up would be MAX-10, but that has other issues not related to China not wanting to take deliveries.

Other than that I wasnt aware that United was behind on deliveries. And given the slow down in travel, wouldnt think they would be in a rush either.

well, a couple of angles to look at this. First question would be where is the leasing company based and thus what tariffs would be applicable.

It also would not answer the issue of Boeing having to import those parts in the first place before being able to sell the assembled plane!

Then the question becomes would the plane be subject to import tariffs if based in the US even if leased by a foreign leasing company.

Ultimately the leasing question would not absolve Boeing of the parts import tariffs issue, thus I think its a moot point my guess is that over the next few days/weeks/months the administration will receive more & more pressure for exemptions once the full scale of the impact of the 10% global tariff takes effect (across multiple industries).

And remember this is global parts for the 787 I expect 737s have similar global supply chains and to be able to switch vendors, and receive the appropriate certifications would take months, if not years and even if sourced elsewhere would STILL be subject to the global 10% tariff (at time of writing).

Of course the Chinese ban on US planes and parts also affects production of the Chinese COMAC frames it really is a game of who blinks first

Regardless of whether the long term effects of tariffs is a good or bad thing (trying to keep away from the political discussion!), the effect of the global 10% tariff has immediate effects even if we cant initially see them today. As for United, it might temporarily help with the advance delivery of some frames using existing inventory, but long term it has to have an effect (until/unless exceptions are made). Of course Airbus has an assembly line in China so I cant imagine how it doesnt help them (in the Chinese market).

Will be really interesting to see how Kirby walks the tightrope tomorrow! Four empty seats in Polaris on my flight back from the UK recently First time ive seen an empty Polaris seat since the pandemic

Well, my flight FRA-IAH was 100% full on Saturday - in all cabins. But to your point, I was seeing tons of PZ space to/from LHR and none to/from FRA until right before the flight, when it PZ1 (and PN1).

The updated fleet plan (15 April) shows no change / no acceleration (yet) from the January plan, so the 20 mentioned retirements at the Morgan conference were not new, but previousily baked in

It does appear the pull-up in MAX deliverers into Q2/Q3 but exiting Q4 with the same MAX numbers (+1) and 1 less 787
