How do I add NEXUS to my existing Global Entry membership?
- On the TTP home page, select "Manage My Membership"
- Then click on the "Add Trusted Traveler Program." Make any changes necessary
- On the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler Program List page, select the checkbox next to the NEXUS option
- On the next page you will see the NEXUS logo. You will need to provide additional information and answer questions; (some of these questions are very similar)
- Once all the application information is entered/ corrected, certify your application and pay the fee
- Applicants seeking to use NEXUS to enter Canada must complete an enrollment interview with the Canada Border Services Agency (some with GE received NEXUS card without interview)

I had NEXUS and GE in the remote past. I let NEXUS expire, and I kept GE.
Since I had a couple of upcoming trips to Canada, I wanted to restart NEXUS.
The websites are better than in the past, but the process is still not quite so straightforward.
I submitted everything online and got conditional approval within 12 hours. Amex picked up the charge.
For the interview, there were exceptionally few choices. The Ambassador Bridge in Detroit had unlimited availability, including weekends. Since I have family in MIchigan, I flew there for the weekend.
The Uber driver, of course, screwed up despite detailed instructions. I was late for the interview. Finding the right office was also a challenge. I went to two incorrect buildings. Of course the CBP staff were rolling their eyes that I could be so stupid as to find the wrong, unmarked building. I've never been to a "supermax," but I imagine it looks a lot like this place.
The office was overflowing at 8:00 am on a Saturday. There were passengers from all over the country since there are so few options.
I was helped quite quickly--within five minutes. The officer made unprofessional comments about my education but then noted my "extensive travel history." He asked usual questions about if I had been arrested in other countries. He asked why I didn't "finish going to school." (I have four degrees.) I believe that this officer may have been accepted early decision to University. I killed him with smiles and kindness, but I thought about saying, "Oh, I know where you're going with this, but I don't date other guys." He would have combusted.
He needed my driving license, and he needed my "other" passport since I'm a dual citizen. I think he just scanned those. He fought with the camera for a while, took my photo, and he took my fingerprints. (I'm sure that my fingerprints have changed since last time. So that makes sense.)
Then I had to wait for a representative from CBSA/ASFC. He was not a spectacular representative of Canada. "Why would you go to Canada?" "What would you see there?" "What's the point of going to Canada?" "Have you ever been arrested in Canada?" "Why would you go to Canada?" "What's the point of going to Canada?"
He finally grumbled and walked away.
(The obvious answer would have been, "I want to go to Canada to spend quality time with you. You must have a lot of friends. Do all Canadians hate life as much as you do? Do you often feel that the world owes you more that what you are getting out of it?)
The US CBP officer reviewed that I had NEXUS, GE, and PreCheck so as to ensure that there was no confusion that I have everything.
Then it was over. The approval email showed up as I was leaving the "facility."
The new card arrived within one week. I'll try it out on the first of the month.
My KTN did not change
Too bad there is no Verified Traveller queue at YVR security. At least not right now. Yay for preclearance at YTZ. I'm psyched to avoid Pearson.

GE -> Nexus Conversion
June 08, 2022: Applied for Nexus, hoping to receive it before my GE membership expired in June 2023
June 07, 2023: Looks like my Nexus application isn't going to receive conditional approval, so I cancelled it to renew GE before multiple planned road trips to Canada and flights. I suppose if I didn't have travel to Canada planned, I could have applied for plain PreCheck instead. At least Amex covered the GE fee since they don't cover Nexus.
June 09, 2023: GE renewal approved, shockingly without needing to reinterview and I apply for Nexus again
August 25, 2023: Nexus conditional approval received
I live in Washington but will be travelling to Michigan in September, so I was able to find an interview appointment at the Detroit Enrollment Center after I land at DTW. Easier to stop there than driving to Blaine.
Assuming I receive full approval, can I use my GE card to enter Canada via the Nexus lanes, since the PASSID number does not change?

Global Entry Approved Aug 2022
Nexus Applied Sept 2023
Current Status Pending Review
How it's supposed to work: Pay $50 get Nexus, interview and get the benefits of Global Entry.
How it works: Pay $100 for Global Entry, get approved, apply for pay $50 to wait in pending approval line, wait, wait some more, at about a year wonder it it will ever happen, then wait, to be continued.

Faster processing times for Global Entry. I've been able to use Global Entry since Aug 2022 while waiting for Nexus and have access to SENTRI pedestrian crossings. SENTRI is popular here by the Mexico border but I avoid taking my car into Mexico.
- Global Entry: 4-6 months.
- NEXUS: 12-14 months.
- SENTRI: 10-12 months.
- FAST: 1-2 weeks.

when I went to renew my GE the first time, I had gone to enroll in NEXUS first, and they told me that you can only be in one TTP at a time, but adding NEXUS effectively renews/extends GE, in the same way that GE renews/extends TSA Precheck. Its all one KTN. The information required by NEXUS includes everything required by GE. And for some inexplicable reason, costs half as much.

I applied for nexus months ago and it's still pending. Is there anyway I can just cancel out the application so I can just renew GE?

From the DHS website:
What is a Known Traveler Number (KTN)?
For members approved for the TSA PreCheck Application Program, this number is 9 digits long, can be a combination of numbers and letters and typically begins with TT for those who enrolled through IDEMIA or TE for those who enrolled through Telos both which are official TSA PreCheck enrollment providers.
For members approved for Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI, the KTN is the CBP PASSID. This nine-digit number usually begins with 15, 98 or 99 and can be found on the back of your NEXUS, SENTRI, or Global Entry card or by logging on to the Trusted Traveler Program website.

NEXUS Full Approval
June 09, 2023: Initial Nexus Application submitted again after my GE fully renews without interview
August 25, 2023: Nexus conditional approval received
September 12, 2023: Completed interview at the Detroit (Ambassador Bridge) enrollment center. Approval notification came about 2 hours later.
Very quick interview at the Detroit Enrollment center with the most laidback CBP officers I've ever met and effectively no interview from the CBSA officer (which I found surprising), who just explained the terms and conditions of using Nexus to enter Canada.
They just needed my passport and driver license and didn't ask for any documents to confirm my current address since my DL address isn't updated. They did take a new photo and scan fingerprints again.
If you're flying to DTW or even have a multi-hour layover there, it's very quick and easy to reach the enrollment center from the airport. Just take I-94 East to I-96 and follow the "Bridge to Canada" signs; stay left whenever possible so you don't miss the turn to enter the cargo facility/enrollment center, or you will be going to Canada. Then when exiting you're mixed in with the truck traffic and get right on to I-96 or I-75.
However, now GE has disappeared from my TTP Dashboard, so I suppose my GE card is no longer valid for re-entering the US next week and I won't be home to receive the Nexus card.
