lcb2013 not "normal" but it is not unheard of for CL's to give out small gifts to guests. Historically speaking this usually happens around the holidays or when lounges first open. Was the mug amex branded or just a generic mug? If it was generic, I feel like they just pawned some SWAG they received from a vendor off on you lol

Just had an odd (good) experience at the T4 lounge. At check-in, the rep was carrying an Amazon package, opened it up and gave me what was inside a portable ceramic mug. He said it was a gift and to enjoy!
Is this normal behavior with Amex? Also while Im thankful for it I dont have space in my luggage as I tend to over pack haha

I believe it's basically wine, maybe beer, maybe mimosas. No cocktails. I don't know if they close the speakeasy space but the bar wouldn't be staffed, and for that matter the mornings are pretty quiet so they try to keep the activity upstairs.

The entire downstairs floor is shut until noon-ish so no chance of getting into the speakeasy until after that. You can get mimosas and I think bloody marys from the bar upstairs, and potentially espresso martinis as well (had it once but not sure if it's dependent on the bartender who's working that day)

Finally here in the evening for the first time. The espresso martini is legit. The food looked fine, but I haven't eaten anything since I'm flying D1 and will eat onboard. They had shredded beef which looked more less the same as what they have at the IAH lounge frequently.

That's what I was going to say, they have had the stairs roped off every time I've been here in the morning. The bartender tonight said the speakeasy opens around 11-12, though she didn't seem very sure, maybe being the evening person. The breakfast drinks are the same as every CL: beer, wine, and mimosas/bloody mary's (and things that can be made from vodka and juice)

invisible777 limited offering booze during the morning hours is pretty standard for CLs and not something that is related to the pandemic. If you're interested in seeing the speakeasy, a little tour may be something you can finagle at the front desk. Amex is a customer service company after all and it never hurts to ask! In any event, even the basic amenities of this CL are really nice. I hope that you and your guest enjoy.
As for the VS lounge, I believe it temporarily closes at 8 or 8:30 AM and then reopens in the afternoon, so that likely throws a wrench in the recommendation above.
Another recommendation is the Delta SkyClub, which has an outdoor patio area that might be nice when you visit in the summer.

I was at the CL JFK Lounge a couple of weeks ago. This was in the evening time. I wasn't impressed with the dinner offerings myself, but the mushroom risotto was pretty good. The highlights of the visit was the 1850 Speakeasy (As usual) and the Equinox Body Lab. I forgot was it was called but I had the tech therapy massage for the legs. That was amazing! I'm a little closer to EWR, but I will go out of my way to fly out of JFK pretty much all the time.
