Unless the processing time of Apple Pay can be as fast as Octopus then this would be a nightmare for the MTR system. It seems to me, by observation, that when people make Apple Pay transactions they are far, far slower than Octopus. The MTR system would a horrendous mess if everyone had to wait even an extra 3 seconds to get through the ticket barriers!
Wonder who are they scared of? I have my guesses.
I tried Oyster pre-Apple Pay. I can card for an Oyster and receive a refund in cash. What's the problem with that?

I forgot was I debited any fees. I didn't notice it if yes.
Getting rid of GBP will be my biggest problem. I withdrew GBP200 cash too to cover a two day trip only to discover I didn't need cash for *anything*. Ended up part paying for a Michelin-starred dinner partly with cash and part with card just to get rid of it.

Way off topic here, but I see that Oyster will refund into a (presumably) UK bank account as well as in cash. I appear to be able to order a card online with a credit card, then refund it online to a bank account.
I must be missing something obvious here?

If you have less then GBP10 you can instant refund https://www.visitlondon.com/travelle...hUEFJhLvYuJ.97 . If you have more you have to do it by post. OK this may stop our fellow FTers over there turning Tube stations into US Mint.

Tried that. After buying 4th Oyster it was frozen and card was blacklisted. Lost 15.
Saw a blog comment from someone else who tried, and they got their 15 back after an hour on the phone and sending bank statements.
I figured out another way to do it but it's not worth the time spent, unless you are loitering around a station with nothing to do. I'm not telling.

When I last visited HK a couple of years ago, we got into a discussion here about how HK and China are more of a cash culture.
However as an affluent city, smart phone use is pervasive and mobile payments allow you to do more secure credit card transactions for those who want to use them and minimizes the need to carry cash.
If you lose an Octopus Card with some cash loaded, can that card be deactivated and the remaining credit transferred to a new card? Of course credit card banks will not impose liability for transactions made after a card is reported lost or stolen.

Yes (still responsible for transactions within 6 hours hence) (you can only recharge US$70 a day)

In case of loss you can only block a personalized Octopus card, like the automatic-refill card you get through your bank. Ordinary Octopus cards you need to treat like cash.
I'm not sure how the blocking works, since many Octopus paypoints -- like those on buses -- are offline. Maybe they periodically upload a blacklist of bad numbers to those terminals?

Back to the original topic, just beware that a large number of HK merchants who take cards apply DCC with no notice at all - so paying with a card can cost rather more than you are expecting.

Any examples? Please add to https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cred...on-dcc-24.html , monitoring that thread too
That's why I use AMEX as much as possible. Never had DCC issue. Most places I shop and eat at take it, if they take credit cards at all. But in general, yes, AMEX is less accepted.

PUTIEN 莆田 at Lee Theatre Plaza. using a Diners Club (MasterCard). Waitress took the card, came back with a printed slip with the total in CAD. I asked why it is in CAD and she gave some BS explanation trying to get me to sign.

How did you deal with the Putien slip? If you didn't put up a fight and signed it, you still have a chargeback right with Diners Canada for a Reason Code 4846 chargeback - see the wiki in the DCC thread.
