Well I am confused. I do not mind ending back in KRT... But does it have to be a continuous westward journey? I tried a simple KRT-DXB-SYD-HKG-LAX-LHR-KRT itinerary and was quoted... 18k!

Changing dates/times doesn't trigger a fee, but it may trigger a re-issue, but so what? No harm in that, and it's often safer.

It may depend on the AA rep and the specific flights that are being changed. IME, some AA reps prefer to always re-ticket to avoid any problems, while others will re-validate if AA flights are changed, but re-ticket if other carriers' flights are changed, to be sure the other carrier gets the automated message with updated ticket number.

Are you sure the ticket is valid for the new flights? If I were you, I'd look up the ticket number on refunds.aa.com and double-check each coupon to be sure it matches the PNR segment. Otherwise you won't be able to check-in until the ticket is re-issued, and downstream carriers may cancel your space on their flights.

AA agents generally prefer to re-issue, especially when other carriers are involved, to avoid stranding you if the carrier thinks you're holding space without a ticket.

Why "for some reason" and "thankfully?" Re-issuing the ticket makes sure everything is clean and tidy. (But still a good idea to check with non-Sabre carriers to be sure they have your updated e-ticket number and hence won't be canceling your space).

I've just read more closely the new US Visa Waiver Program restrictions, in which some of those who took advantage of the fantastic ex-KRT xONEx deals might inadvertently get caught up.

Concretely:

While the page does mention that certain other travelers may qualify for a waiver of the requirements, it's not clear that they'll think to include a special exception for Flyertalkers. And indeed, as far as making exceptions goes, there are quite some other groups (e.g. International Aid Workers, etc) who are no doubt a much higher priority.

Though I'm not quite sure how this will work in practice, it would be a real PITA for someone to be turned away at the airport on account of this detail....

As there's no possibility anyone still travelling on this great AONEX fare, my suggestion is for anyone affected of these new rules to either report passport with KRT stamp "lost" or get a secondary passport, as I did when planning on an AONE4 ex-KRT with an Israeli passport stamp. I still regret not finalizing the AONE4 plan to that price

Beeing in Teheran for some days, 10 years ago, I did have some questions of what matter took me there, at Immigration, when entering USA. After passport renewal, nobody asked anything. Living in a country with VWP you nowadays just do the APC, the only person speaking (most often not) to you is at Customs

Not sure that will work universally. For starts, ever since airlines started sharing APIS data with governments, full PNR info has been collected for all passengers. Consequently, stamp or no-stamp, there's a possibility that having KRT included in a post-2011 itinerary might eventually result in auto-cancellation of the ESTA.

The real problem isn't so much explaining the trip to a CBP officer upon arrival as it is getting on the plane in the first place if one's ESTA is unexpectedly voided by an automated batch-process.

There's really no telling how these new provisions will be implemented in practice - but given the stories one hears of totally law-abiding people being arbitrarily prohibited from travel (sometimes even after check-in), it's not impossible these new regulations might have some nasty unintended consequences for Flyertalkers.

I enter USA on ESTA and have used the kiosks the last dozen or so entries. Every single time I still get checked by an immigration official (albeit more quickly than not using the kiosk).

I did not know of the new ruling. However the passport which has the Sudan stamps in it has since expired and been renewed. And for a totally unrelated reason I got my latest esta attached to another passport (I have triple nationality). Nowadays when allying for an esta you have to list all other passports you have, which I did.
I entered the US without trouble in January this year.
