I purchased an int'l ticket over the phone yesterday. I informed the CSR that I wanted to use 2003 paper SWU H+ for the upgrades, not the new 2004 e-SWU and asked her to note in the United field. She said it was not necessary as both the 2003 paper SWU H+ and the new 2004 e-SWU had the same profile code. Therefore, they were treated the same.

That's good news, and certainly makes things easier for the UA reservation agents!

ecmt...posted by me on Jan 3:
This is really hit and miss as far as Reservations and Mileage Plus agents go. I've had them tell me "Yes" "No" and "You were misinformed." All within the same hour.
But buried deep within the following United profile:
S*PMO/UG-SYSTEM
There is a passage that states that effective Jan 1, your old unexpired 2003 Systemwides will allow the same Q, V, Ws as the new 2004s for Region 2 travel.
It's buried deep in there and easily skipped over, but it should be there. Just had an res agent find it and tell me it was indeed Kosher.
So...2 challenges:
1. Find a Res agent that knows it's okay and books you in.
2. Find a check-in agent that knows and doesn't try to reject your 2003 paper Systemwide.
Good Luck!

What I see happening is you use a paper SWU and it is collected, then an electronic is deducted too. Then you have to fight to get your electronic one back. This happened when the NA and 500 milers went electronic.

That is exactly what I was thinking Baze. This is certainly not the time to think that maybe somebody was doing you a "favor" by not collecting your cert.

Baze and Punki,
What you posted is exactly what just happened to me. I checked in and used a Sweet Spot to support my upograde and after checking in, I proceeded to the RCC. While I was there, I decided to call MP to check on my account activities and to my guess what, ONE of my new SWU`s was deducted. I immediately asked to speak to a supervisor to replace my SWU.

sf4dfish...what I would have done (and have done when this happens with Confirmed Region 1s) would be to just walk up to the RCC agent and tell them what happened, have them off-load me and then re-check me in correctly. The off-loading automatically returns your E-Upgrade to your bank. Calling Mileage Plus or Customer Relations can be a pain and can often take time and/or supervisor. And if the RCC agent wants proof of your handing over paper like you claim, they can simply call whoever checked you in (they can tell on the ticket and/or on the computer).
Although I'm not certain you could do it this way if you have checked luggage.
Also, I always recommend that you make a photocopy of any paper certificates before you hand them in, just in case you need the cert number or anything after-the-fact to support what you handed over at another location. I always write the date and flight number on this photocopy, as well.
