From a shareholder perspective, it looks pretty smart to have people paying for upgrades rather than giving them away for free...

Well, I guess it's about not totally destroying the Y+ and C market by making passengers always purchasing economy tickets and easily securing that Optiontown upgrade for much less money than the original high fare ticket would have cost.

I can understand them holding back but close to 30 seats still available they were asking ALL passangers if they would like to upgrade for points....
I just feel like ive been screwed, so im sure they are feeling its worth their 8 euros.... personally I think the company could do this better but then again I DO NOT own shares, ive allready opened multiple star alliance accounts due to the fact that my qualification period on SAS is really bad for me and they refuse to change it so I had to improvise, now I will just start collecting more and more with them... if only they had a cc for me to use too

Upgrade for points is IMHO one of the best ways to use these points, specially on longer flights. Think about OT as kind of low cost lottery ticket, possibly sometimes saving money or points you would otherwise pay for better flight class or upgrade Don't be angry on OT, it's not worth it. You don't win in Las Vegas casino every time either. But statistics works, there is above zero probability to get OT upgrade and sometimes you will get it Certainly if you fly often enough. Not guaranteed for any specific flight though even if you might be the only one passenger on board.
Would be very interesting to read - let's say on Wikileaks website - description of real OT upgrade algorithms and how all this works. But very likely after such leak real methods would be changed anyway... Just like in quantum mechanics - if you measure some parameter, other parameters change as a result of the measurement process itself.

Waiting for response
Hi guys,
My first post in this forum which has given me a lot of valuable information. Thank you guys :-)
Just wanted to let you know, I signed up for a UTo a month ago on Stockholm - Chicago, and I am flying tomorrow. Still no reply, and Optiontown is showing "Upgrade decision pending".
There are plenty of available seats in Economy, Economy+ and Business, so I am really anxious about the outcome of the upgrade.

Upgrade to Business is EUR 311 and Economy Extra EUR 140.

I had plenty of miles for upgrades to either E+ or C on many TATL flights between CPH and IAD/ORD/EWR, and tried both directions, but only managed to snag them a couple of times, otherwise was denied.
I agree it is one of the best values - if you can get it. The uncertainty, and then most often disappointment, is what killed it for me.

For me, it is 60 000 points in total to upgrade to business round trip, while I earn 3 000 points on the ticket.
Compare this to an OT upgrade where I would get 20 000 points, not spend 60 000 points, and the company would pay for the upgrade. I dont see how that can be better value?

You're lucky to have a company that picks up the price for that kind of upgrade despite not going through a travel agency or similar.

Has it become possible to upgrade for points at the gate more frequently than previously? I gave up on SK a few years ago when only about 2 out of every 10 requests for points upgrades were available/granted. That was with both *G and EB silver status.

Apparently they weren't that out for the two crew relatives (~16YO girls)discretely seated in the rear, otherwise empty, business cabin of the 340...

Happened to me when trying to upgrade on SK904 on January 27th. At check-in I was told no upgrade was possible due to they didn't have any meals.

Some people may be happy just sitting in C even without C meals.
SAS should have an option of upgrade to C without meal upgrade.
Just put a note on the seat which shows "No C meal choice".

I been searching for an answer about optiontown and believe that this is the thread to post in.
I have an awardtrip ARN-EWR in May booked in Economy Extra (they had no seats in business) but ofcourse they have a lot of seats in business still.
Will it be possible for me to use Optiontown for upgrade? Or will they refuse me as I am traveling only on points? It would be pretty good for me only paying upgrade and receive full points for the trip.

It states in the conditions that award tickets are not upgradeable on Optiontown. Tried my self as well, it's a no go.
SAS will not upgrade you for points either on awards, so no need to get your hopes up about sitting up front really. Have some NF and enjoy Extra ^
