Next week I would like to do that as well, but unfortunately for me, the A380 is full in ALL classes ...
Hmm didnt realize I couldnt request the upgrade at my point of origin but rather at DOH (or BKK) to upgrade with qcredits. So I have a 14ish hour layover between my incoming flight to DOH and my flight from DOH to BKK (which id like to upgrade). My plan was to leave the airport, but maybe upon exiting customs and immigration I can pop back up to the check in desks and see if they can process the upgrade there? Or better just stick to the lounge/upgrade counter airside to do it? But hearing that youve been able to day-of upgrade is reassuring (although seeing that you have never been able to upgrade online is also not a good look for QR). And also surprising that even with peak season over, QR is filling up 380s even weeks in advance

In BKK it was during checking at the checkin counter, quite straight forward. But in DOH the will process the upgrade only after sale is closed, which is around 1:30 to 2 hours before departure. I did leave my request with the lounge reception (Al Safwa) and followed up a few times, asI had 4h waiting time.

I do not know what happened, but you cant get ANY QR flight out of BKK between the 14th of march and the 20th or so. It may be an IT glitch though, or they are really fully booked - its just crazy

They have been crazy packed. My wife was just upgraded from business to first on the A-380 (DOH-BKK). Not a single seat left on that flight!
As a general comment about Q-Credits, It's too bad they are such a sham with the credits, One long distance upgrade leaved you with a bunch of useless credits. Should have converted that to 2 potential long haul upgrades per year and left it at that. Hell, even 1 long haul upgrade would be less insulting than to wave a large number of credits that had almost no possibility to be fully utilized.

So basically if I want to try to get a battlefield J to F upgrade I literally have to wait until QR cant feasibly find someone to buy an F DOH-BKK ticket? Ooof, I guess it is what it is. But I 1000% agree with SullyofDoha s sentiments. Qcredits seem to be the weakest and most useless OWE upgrade mechanism in the alliance. I mean as bad as AA is, at least one knows that they will actually be able to use their SWUs, even if its for a LGA-MIA segment. Until a few days ago when I miraculously was able to find that unicorn moment where the online upgrade mechanism was working, Ive never been able to use any Qcredits and subsequently theyve gone to wasteits quite unfortunate

Looking to upgrade the wife and son to J on an upcoming flight with QCredits. At the moment there is no availability at the saver level and I was wondering if it is possible to do the upgrade during check in. Would there be any additional costs/taxes that need to be paid with the upgrade? Cheers

It is possible to UG at the airport, but it's not guaranteed. (Seats need to be available, catering, etc.) If you do UG using QCredits, there is no additional cost.

It depends where you're flying from as to whether there is an extra cost. From the UK (and I think another couple of countries) there is extra tax to be paid.

By seats being available do you mean that business cabin isn’t fully booked or does there have to be award space aswell?

The former - at the airport award availability is not required, but there are other considerations in addition to actual empty seats.

Ah that’s good to know. Last time I tried upgrading at the airport in the UK I was told I could only upgrade by paying the 1600 “special offer” upgrade. Will try again, Thanks.

One more condition: the member using his avios to upgrade other people at airport check-in need to be physically present at the airport (but dont need to travel).

I am planning to book DXB - DOH - GVA

Currently have 100 QCredits

will this be sufficient to upgrade both legs?

and would it let me upgrade one leg if the other is not available?

never used Qcredits before. Thanks

You can check the QCalculator if 100 QCredits would be sufficient just to be on a safer side but I think it's more than enough. And yes, you can upgrade sector-by-sector.

Upgrades are by sectors, thus if you're lucky you can upgrade both sectors.
100 credits more than enough.
an example: SYD-DOH-HEL upgrade to J
SYD-DOH 39 qcredits
DOH-HEL 28 qcredfits
