I think on the long run, it'll make sense to consolidate with the other OWs in T3 @ LHR. That also means they'd stop having to pay skyteam for lounge access for the Y flying elites (I assume it'll be cheaper to pay into another OW partner lounge and QR would also get reciprocal revenue from the premium OW flyers entering their lounge)
But it'll also be a shame loosing the QR Lounge at LHR. The standard of facilities could easily be replicated or even improved at T3, but the T4 lounge currently has this special to it, at least for me, in the sense that the QR planes park really close to it so that you can usually see the plane you'll be going on from inside the lounge.
It really helps establish the feeling that you've already started your journey at the lounge and you are literally just 'stepping onto' your plane as the boarding call is made, rather than having to go on another 'journey' to spend 10 minutes walking to the gate and waiting there again (hello HKG).

A friend recently flew Emirates to BHX. He said the service was very busy, so evidently there is a market for people who do not want to travel to London to commence their journey.

Although EK is the lead carrier to the US and is expanding further into MCO and SEA, it looks like QR is lots of room to grow. When checking the top 20 metro areas, many are not currently served by any of the Gulf carriers.
