What happened to inflight texting?

About 2 years ago, QF did the inflight texting / blackberry trial on one aircraft. Did the trial fail either technically or commercially? Haven't heard anything about it since...

I remember being on a PER-SYD flight when the CSM announced that the flight was a trial of in-flight sms technology and we were free to switch on our mobiles and send text messages. I sent one to a friend (who later confirmed that it came through at the time it was sent from 38,000 odd feet).

Would be interesting to see what exactly happened after this testing, I haven't heard much more about it going forward.

I did a bit of googling, seems like Qantas has the equipment installed on quite a few of their aircraft, but the hold up is negotiation on the revenue sharing between QF and the mobile carriers (of course).

Does the A380 actually have the (limited) internet access that was was initially promised?

They have the equipment (at least VH-OQB does) and it is mentioned in the entertainment system, but it is not turned on.

Who gives a rat's arse? Keep aeroplanes mobile-free.

C'mon shillard, tell us what you really think

I'd be okay with it if people turned off their sound...

SMS is just one grade above Twitter - which is merely haiku for ritalin-riddled mental defectives.

Except in industries like IT, where it's a valuable tool for notifications when servers go 'titsup'. That said, at 38000 feet with no internet, there's not much you can do anyway (Except SMS someone on the ground :P)

Most SMS should die though yes. It is handy when in meetings and you need to send a quick urgent line to someone.

Twitter should go and die though

Internet / SMS access on all TT flights would be a big draw card for me.

I believe there should be internet / email / SMS / blackberry access on flights, but no calling.

Blackberry access would be nice. But roaming charges will be by country you just flown over or by satellite?
I normally end up ringing someone at 38000ft every 20 flights. Just happens things get left in customs or forgot something and got bored during mid-flight.

I believe the plane itself is considered a "country" so the charges will be consistent throughout the whole flight.

Is Tiger Airways working on this?

Charges will be set by the airline and the technical carrier and would have nothing to do with the country you currently fly over.
