Except in industries like IT, where it's a valuable tool for notifications when servers go 'titsup'. That said, at 38000 feet with no internet, there's not much you can do anyway (Except SMS someone on the ground :P)

Most SMS should die though yes. It is handy when in meetings and you need to send a quick urgent line to someone.

Twitter should go and die though
