Frequent Flyer program - how does it work?
Hi to all,
Please excuse my significant ignorance here, after reading through the Qantas website I am still struggling to understand the basic concepts when it comes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.
I thought I should ask my questions here as the web forum is a little more receptive then an email to Qantas.
Some questions I have:
*Given that I am not a Qantas Frequent Flyer member, however I have a sibling who is - can I use their card to collect points? ie. For hotel bookings etc. even though my name is not on the card?
*Is it possible to make a family account?
Ie. Family members have their own card, however the points earned go into the one account?
*How are points earned by booking flights and what are ‘Awards’ flights?
*Can I use my existing points to book a flight which also rewards points?
Thankyou for you patience.
Regards
-Adam

Hi Adam,
No. The name on the reservation needs to be the same as the name on the Qantas FF Card
Nope. Need one card per member, but you do have the ability to transfer up to 100,000 points to a related family member once in every 12 month period.
You simply supply QF with your QF FF number when you book. You are then awarded 1 point per mile of travel, with a minimum points guarantee of 1000 points on any Qantas flight with a QF Flight number. Award flights are flights you redeem using the points you earned from revenue flights. Qantas list the earn and redeem rates on their website. Check it out there.
nope. Redeeming points for a flight books you into a fare class that does not award points. This makes sense. Points are awarded for spend, not actually being on the plane itself.
The Qantas Frequent Flyer website is pretty extensive. Have a read of it if you need clarification on stuff

drewbles Thankyou for your reply - very much appreciated!
Making a lot more sense now.
Rumour a few weeks back was that FF membership joining fee was going to be abolished after July 1st.
Is that still the plan? Will be interesting to see how the deal with Woolworths works - I am very keen to join however at this stage I can't justify the $82.50 for membership. Although I do spend approx $70 weekly at Woolworths, so its something I need to consider.
Thanks again.

Also there are reports here that people have joined QFF overseas (which is free) and when they moved to Australia a few months later the account is just transfered to Australia which is also free.

Why not just wait until you can join legitimately through Everyday Rewards web site in about 3 weeks time and not worry about being caught trying to trick the system with false information. Assuming you don't really live outside Australia/NZ then it could be seen as a fraudulent activity for the purpose of avoiding paying the fee. I would rather not take the risk and just wait 3 weeks and join legitimately on-line for free.

You join QFF because of easy credit card points, lifetime status, ease of status, oneway awards etc.

I expect this is the target and all part of QF's scheme to be the prevalent loyalty program in Australia.

The miles for QF, AA and BA are the same. But yes, QF is known to be the program with the worst earn/burn ratio. It's strength is not getting cheap award flight by flying OW.

What do you mean by ease of status?

I think DUF meant that it's easier to get to, and maintain, a high level of FF status with QF than with many other OW airlines. i.e. do not have to fly as much to attain the top status level.
