Smaller, quieter with more attentive staff!^
SYD has the full design concept which MEL just can't match.
However for the "soft" component MEL is the winner by a mile.
I would go MEL and you also get a longer F flight to enjoy the onboard service for a longer period.
Of course you should confirm that MEL-HKG has reinstated F class.

A good summation.

Personally I prefer the MEL lounge especially the spa treatment area as you look out over the apron. In SYD you just look at a wall.

MEL also feels less tired almost certainly due to the different traffic levels.

I'm not sure the 9 miles more in distance makes that much difference!

Here I was thinking it was it was around 300!
Ok but 9 miles could be an extra drink for some FTers.

Thanks for the heads up ^
Question?
Do they have the free massage in the first class before boarding in MEL?
From the Qantas website they show First Class inventory

Tue 23:55 Melbourne 05:50
(Wed) Hong Kong QF29 2 First

however as I look what concerns me is the departure time
I would think the lounge would be closed
Thinking of staying with the Sydney departure nice noon departure
Did it last year great flight
Thoughts?

The MEL actually stays open until QF29 departs.

The dedicated on-street First Check-in area closes for a few hours after the 6pm AKL flight.

If you need more information about this, contact the lounge on the relevant number here:

I think it remains open for this flight. I haven't taken this flight, but was on a much-delayed flight to AKL a few months back and was in this lounge till around 2145. It showed no signs of closing at that time. If in any doubt I imagine QF would (well, should) be able to tell you.

You can (sort of) compare SYD and MEL Flounges here.

I have had only a couple of visits in each Flounge, and prefer MEL, probably because it was quieter and more relaxed than SYD.

I was on MEL-HKG QF29 last week. The F curb-side check-in and the F lounge are both open for this flight.

In the F lounge, after announcing the boarding for QF29, they also announce that the F lounge is closing but the J lounge will be staying open.

When I took QF29 in February, the Spa was open in the 3 hours before the flight.
