Laptop Serial Numbers?

Hello,

I'm curious if anyone knows whether airport security, particularly in Canada, will look for serial numbers or other similar identification on a laptop computer? I'm flying on Friday within Canada- from western Canada to eastern Canada, and have not yet taken this laptop with me on a flight.
Reason I ask is because my laptop is refurbished, but it does not have a serial number sticker on it. So I'm concerned whether security might spot this and begin interrogating me about it, or whether I should bring along whatever documentation I have from the purchase of the laptop just in-case.
I don't fly very often- so I thought I would pose the question in a forum with people that likely fly considerably more than I do, and what their experiences with laptops and airport security, again, particularly within Canada, has been.

Thank You!

I don't think they will care and I've never heard of anyone looking at serial numbers, but if you are truly worried about an overzealous inspector, go to the customs office and get one of those greenish cards that are useful for registration/declaration of property when going international. You'll get an onsite "inspection", they will record the serial number and probably ask all there needs to be asked before stamping your card. (of course, you have to travel with the card...)

and welcome to FT!

I travel frequently throughout Canada (also into the U.S.) and have never seen the security people check the serial number of my laptop or anyone else's, for that matter. Don't even worry about it!

However, if you intend on taking it to another country at some point, then carry your receipt along, just to be on the safe side. Actually, I carry all of my computer-related receipts when I travel to the U.S. because I do not want any problems with Canadian Customs when coming back.

My son (17 at the time) is a computer tech and his personal laptop has all kinds of mods on it, including missing pieces of the case trim so it is easier to swap out the hard drive. He did get questioned at YOW about it but when he showed them he was carrying a second hard drive and the mod was to make swapping easier, he was let through. This was after Aug. 10. On the return trip, YHZ didn't even notice.

Especially with wear, lots of laptops tend to lose stickers. I'm sure they see lots of that...

Are you thinking of the Windows serial #? There's no requirement a laptop even have Windows!

My laptop does *NOT* have such a sticker, it's caused no problems.
