Can people carry guns on private planes? E.g some security guards flying from USA to UK and they stay on the plane.

The person is still subject to the customs and firearms regulations of the UK regardless of who owns the plane and whether the person wishes to stay on the plane pending departure. What those regulations are, I haven't the foggiest clue.

The UK can be a unhappy place for owners of firearms, even law abiding ones from the States.

I don't know a out travel to the UK, but for private aviation within the US, you can carry a firearm provided you do not enter the secure area of an airport, are legal in both the starting location and the destination (carry permits, vehicle carry laws), and it is not against airport regulations for that particular airport.
I am not a lawyer, but this is my understanding.

As someone who works in general aviation, I see gun cases often. Mostly rifles and shotguns but every now and again, the occasional handgun.

The only laws pertaining to carrying a gun on a privately owned airplane would be the laws carrying the gun to and from the airport from the state or municipality you depart from and arrive at.
Passengers on privately owned airplanes, including corporate jets do not go through any government security because they do not depart or arrive at airline terminals, they use other facilities at the airports, known as Fixed base Operators or FBOs and often fly into airports that do not have any airline service at all, which means no TSA.
A well known radio personality, Don Imus is licensed to carry a concealed handgun in New York City, and frequently flies between NYC and his Ranch for Kids with Cancer in New Mexico. He used to fly on NetJets, but now flies on CitationAir, both fractional jet operators and he has even stated on the air the reason he bought a share of a corporate jet was that he could carry his gun with him at all time.
Mr. Elliott

They cannot what?
Within the US, guns can be carried on GA aircraft without issue, possible exception being DCA or other airports within a presidential protection zone where TSA must inspect passengers and planes. That is assuming, as Mr. Elliott pointed out, that it's legal to have the weapon at both departure and arrival cities/airports.
Outside the US, it's governed by the laws of the country involved.

Indeed I was referring to people licensed to carry/own firearms in the US and their on ward travel to the UK.
You would require a British Visitor's Firearms Permit. And you will not obtain one for a handgun, or any type of firearm if you reason for applying is personal security or self defence. Also handguns are generally prohibited from import.
The only exemptions are for certain qualified law enforcement officers (like air marshals) who require no permit, but surrender their firearm before they leave the airport (there is another exemption for close protection officers for various heads of state but that is not the question).
