Because I’ve tried to use Hong Kong Airlines web site to book off and on for months with no success. After my difficulty in getting any of my calls returned by China Eastern Airlines over my lost bags 18 months ago, I have no desire to call another Chinese airline and be given the run around. But, I guess that I have no choice.

I was hoping a bagged sandwich wouldn't be much of a transmission risk to the crew.

Well it sounds a bit ridiculous to be honest, many other airlines are still serving food and their fares haven't reduced in price. Ive had a lucky escape as I was just about the book a business class flight with them a couple of days ago

Unlike UO, HX won't have much objection to you BYO.

Has anyone visited their other lounge recently, namely Bauhinia? I'm just wondering what I could potentially take as a BYO onto the aircraft from there

Maybe it's not HX, but the whole HNA group will Balkanize:

With HU in disarray, I wonder if HX will be left out to dry.

If HU were to get sold, HNA might be able to save HX. HX is more attractive than HU from an investment standpoint because it only has one direct competitor whereas HU is constantly in a blood bath. As of now, this is nothing but speculation, of course.
