By status, fare class, and/or who you travel with.

Just slight change of subject. Do u think the lounges ever strictly control if say a packet of nuts or a can of drink is packed in ur carry on luggage for ur flight. I usually do this on my hkg-tpe flight as they will only serve tea/coffee/water on short flights. Anyone had an issue with this? Or is the rule really for those who maybe would take the kitchen sink?

Yeah, upgrades are determined first on status. Emerald or higher basically will give u the number 1 spot. If you have for example 2 or more emeralds on the plane..which is common, then its
determined by who checks in first. So i always try to checkin 20-24hrs before my flight departs online.
Golds will get upgrades very rarely. Then members come next. Then finially comes down to fare class
I am looking at a possible upgrade either way to brisbane 1 week after chinese new year.

I'm trying to book 2 Premium/Royal Laurel award seats on EVA using United miles for LAX-TPE. When I searched mid- to late-May dates, I always found availability for 1 seat, but never for 2. Does this mean there is only 1 seat available on every flight, or is there a quirk on the website that doesn't allow you to see more than 1 award seat at a time?

For attaining elite status, does CI go by some pre-fixed definition of 12 months (like January to December) or if it's just any 12 month period?

Haha I must have really good luck, then.

You're not supposed to, but, as long as you're discreet and not taking a lot, then they usually either not notice or don't care.

It's use to be 1 award seat per flight.

I think right now it's 1 award seat per cabin, especially if it's Royal Laurel now.

You will have to wait list the other one and hope it will clear out 3 days prior to travel, or buy that one with $.

Any 12 months period or 365 days.

System will automatically do the any 12 months calculations.

365 days must call Taipei and get it manually altered.

Thanks, coolfish. If I waitlist, how does that work? Will it clear if there is an open seat in Premium/Royal Laurel AND there are no upgrades? Who gets priority for open seats? I'm worried that if I waitlist and it doesn't clear, I'll be stuck with no seat at all, not even in economy.

They wont fill business seats unless they are overbooked in economy.

I fly SFO-TPE and back at least once a year; I got bumped on TPE-SFO about four years ago and my friend and I got bumped going to TPE about a month ago (really lucky for him since he's never flown neither in business class or to Asia before). If I go to Taiwan in April, then it'll be the first time I've qualified for any sort of non-basic status on any FFP.

WOW

Wow that is amazing.. maybe i should fly to SFO. I thought i was very lucky to get an upgrade on the flight from Amsterdam which at first i was told it was only to Bangkok. But when i was getting back on the plane to Taipei the next morning i just got the guy to scan my bar-code in and it went red because it was still showing the C class and so they re arranged me back into Business.

I really like the front cabin as its very small and feels more personal. This is by the way for the non first class 747's.

It will be sad when the 747's go as they are unlikely ever to have that number of business class seats which will reduce the chance of upgrade. Even the 777 might only have 36 seats in Business. A330 like wise with its 30 seats is damn hard to get even with emerald.

What if elite members request upgrades? Or what happens if business class is fully booked? Would I be grounded or bumped to another flight or offered an economy seat instead?

I guess I'm just trying to figure out whether I should reserve 1 business seat with points and wait list the other, or reserve the other in economy. This is supposed to be a romantic trip for our anniversary, so I'd rather not get split up. But it's also my first time booking international awards, so I don't want to make a mistake. Any advice would be much appreciated!

It will clear up the moment BR stops trying to sell those seats or give to Diamonds.

I am not so sure about award seats but for upgrades, if there's like tons of seats 72 hours prior to your flight, you might get the second seat cleared because that's when they sort out all the reserved seats in the cabins. If there are only a few seats left, they might keep it till you check in or even when you are at the gate (so you will miss the lounge usage).

Once you get your seats you won't be bumped.

You are out of luck if there are elite members looking for those seats or the cabin is fully booked. You can check with them to see how full are flights. Give them a call.
