Does the non-anonymity of reputation mean it is now a useless feature?

Does the non-anonymity of reputation mean it is now a useless feature?
OK so well all get to find out how popular or HATED we all are and who was responsible. Isn't it great!
Punki has rightly started a thread about the anonymity causing problems in that it was possible to sign as another FTer when giving bad reputation.
Now that we all know who is giving who reputation are we all going to turn into chicken ....s and not give out bad reputation?
Its a tough one and doubtless I get donged/blonged/honked for starting another reputation thread in the ORP forum!

The stated purpose of Reputation was to show one's reputation when it came to trades on Coupon Connection. It was meant to identify people who were cheating the system (and the membership) by giving them Red Ratings (not to be confused with Red Rum) and for newcommers to have some kind of assuarance that when dealing with people with Green Ratings their transactions would go well.
It then became "The Ratings Game" to see who could become most popular/unpopular on FlyerTalk.
I've played the game, giving positive points to people's whose posts I found enlightening and, on occasion, entertaining. I have not given out any dings, not because I'm a saint, but because I have not found a post so egregious that I took enough offense to it ( can you tell I don't visit OMNI? ). If I disagree with a poster, I won't ding them. I'll explain my differences in a reply. If we can't come to terms, then I "agree to disagree" and move on. I won't ding people out of spite.
So I imagine "The Ratings Game" will continue, just on a more "level" playing field. People will "bling" folks whose threads they like. People who choose to continue to ding will probably note why they dinged, lest they get "called-out" in ORP or private email. It won't be the anonymous slamming that evidently has occurred prior to today. That should pretty much end now with accountability now enforced.
I imagine within a week or two, the great roar will become a dull roar and then eventually a background hum...

It is still a good mode of commenting directly to the individual and not to the world at large.
One can always bestow "bling" (approval) on a person even while disagreeing with his post.

I am still totally lost on this whole subject, and would like to know if there is somewhere to go that will explain what Reputation is, how points are calculated, what those stupid symbols at the bottom of our posts mean, and why there is a coloured box after our post count. Like since this upgrade, there is a lot of incomprehensible and superfluous junk cluttering FT. Is it good or bad to have a puff of smoke? Or a caution symbol? Or a coloured dot or square?

I don't think it makes the system useless at all. Actually, I think it is now useful.
Before, anyone with a "score to settle" could ding away with no fear. Now, they can still ding away, but know that they may be held accountable for their actions.

The green-coloured lozenges below your name reflect your reputation points:
1 green lozenge: Reputation Score = 1-99
2 green lozenges: Reputation Score = 100-199
3 green lozenges: Reputation Score = 200-299
4 green lozenges: Reputation Score = 300-399
etc.
If you go below zero, you get red lozenges.
One earns reputation points by having others click on the balancing scales below your name and bestowing approval or disapproval.

This naming has been a positive for me. Aside from the fact that I kept forgetting to sign my name, so now people will know it was me who gave them pts, now I get to see who anonymously, probably for the same reason, gave them to me

Thanks, SPN Lifer, I still do not understand why this was added, nor much else about such a stupid feature. What is the point of rating a post? As others have posted elsewhere, this is a return to junior high school and far below what one expects from a place like FT.

Any user can let you know whether they approve or disapprove of one of your posts by clicking the reputation button associated with the post. They can also provide a short comment as to why they approved or disapproved.

Perhaps it was also intended (not by our host, but by the software developers) to add interest and encourage people to stay current, be helpful, and not rest on their laurels?
I agree with the high school or junior high school perception. However, many of us -- myself included -- often fall back on attitudes, lessons, and behaviors acquired in that period of our lives, before things became so complicated.
So if you haven't yet bestowed your third daily bling, perhaps you'll put me on the road to a third green lozenge?
