Dear FTers, any idea when will JAL join onewold?! Cheers
QUOTE
ONEWORLD: Member elect JAL to become single Japan Airlines International from 1 October
Member elect Japan Airlines will be a single operating company from 1 October, when its present two operating companies, JAL International and JAL Domestic, are unified to form the single Japan Airlines International.
The change will complete the merger of the former Japan Airlines and Japan Air System, which began four years ago, giving the group much bigger domestic presence.
Combining the two operating companies will achieve greater efficiency and cost reduction by eliminating duplication and improving intra-company communications.

The generally accepted date is April 2007. Remember that before JL can join OW, all 6 of the other OW airlines (excluding EI) must have completed the changes to their computer and manual systems to accomodate JL; as well as JL having converted to OW standards (little things like accepting e-tickets). So there are a lot of disparate projects that must all be completed before JL can join. I guess MA and RJ must also be ready for JL before JL can join, but maybe JL will join before they do (I doubt that).

Paperless ticketing links well advanced with three alliance recruits: All three of oneworld's airline recruits - Japan Airlines, Malv and Royal Jordanian - are on track in their preparations to join the alliance early next year, in particular in implementing interline e-ticketing (IET) with their prospective oneworld partners, enabling passengers to make connections between flights using electronic tickets only.
oneworld has since April 2005 been the only alliance with IET between all its member airlines, enabling passengers to make transfers throughout the group's network without having to recourse to traditional, losable paper tickets.
The alliance requires all new recruits to offer its full range of services and benefits from the day they beco
Bringing the three new carriers on board will entail a total of 27 IET connections. Thirteen of them have already been implemented.
British Airways and American Airlines have now completed IET links with all three of the airlines lining up to join the alliance, while Malv has become the first of the newcomers to complete IET links with all of oneworld's existing members.
JAL already offers IET with five of the alliance's current members - American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, LAN and, most recently, Finnair. Royal Jordanian in August achieved its very fist IET links - with its oneworld sponsor British Airways and then American Airlines.

Interesting that MA has e-tickets down pat already yet isn't being allowed to join for another 4+ months ... due to the other inter-operability requirements (little things like common baggage tracking, etc.). Makes me wonder when RJ will be joining, they seem to be struggling to get ready.
As an aside, MA has announced a >50% increase in their long-haul fleet (but don't get too excited, they are adding 1 767-300 to their existing 2x762 fleet). So looks like MA has big plans from joining Oneworld.

Is this good or bad for Oneworld?
Will you get full credit as a one world flight? Do you want to fly KE?
Why would JAL do this with an airline part being part of Skyteam?
JAL and KE are expanding their codeshare agreement by 40% over 11 routes. Under the new agreement, there will be codeshare flights from Seoul Incheon to Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai , and to Nagoya Chubu.
Why would JAL do this with an airline part being part of Skyteam?

QF codeshare for example with both NZ and AF!
You only get credit when you are on OW metal however so don't think you can get on the KE flight and get away with getting credit for a JL codeshare.

The reason why JL is doing so ? You'd have to read between the lines, they discontiued several flights from FUK/KIX to South Korea (or vice versa) so far, besides they have a plan to decrease the total number of flights(to/from NRT) due to the low frequency. So, code-sharing with KE would be the only option.
Not only developing the partnership with KE. But currently, most of the JL flights within EU market that's been covered by AF code-share or Alitalia. They had been doing its business outside of the alliance and supposed to go its own way but made a u-turn and now heading to joining OW.
