Uh Oh: Terrorist Attack In Cairo

Not at all trying to be political here, but as someoen who has bought XONEX tickets ex-CAI, I think it's important for people to be aware of this. When I made the decision to start in CAI, I was comforted by the fact that the there had been no attack on tourists in six years -- that the authorities had the situation under control. One attack does not make for epidemic, but if I were contemplating starting in CAI, I'd pay close attention to events on the ground.

Too bad. Cairo is, for all its faults, is a wonderful and fascinating city to explore.

As awful, mercenary and disgusting as it sounds, what I'll be keeping my eyes on is the prices...

I don't know how it is today, but we spent a week in Egypt doing the tourist circuit just a few days after the U.S. retaliation to the African embassy bombings a few years back. Although we kept a low profile and avoided target zones as much as possible I was very impressed by the overwhelming - and quite professional appearing - presence of military and police. At that time at least Egypt was taking their tourist industry seriously.

Visiting Cairo in June

I will be starting my 3rd Egypt-orginated RTW in June in Cairo (ending 1, starting another). I visited the Khan al-Khalili bazaar last year. Lots of fun, and I felt very safe even at night. I think I will be a bit more low-key this visit. Maybe just stay in hotel for the day and go to pool, etc. But then, I don't live my life in fear. I'm off to Thailand on Wednesday; they had bombing at airport in southern Thailand last week.
I am just going to go about my business. And hope for the best -- not that I'm going to Bagdad this year or anything.
I think this ABSOLUTELY should be posted on this site. We need to be aware.

When I was there last year, one of the armed police at the museum at Memphis gave me his AK-47 to hold while he took of me with it . . . and then asked for money! I paid him under the theory that anyone willing to give me his gun is crazy enough to shoot me for nom-payment.

I too would go again, but am thinking that IST might be a better bet in terms of price and convenience for an AONE5 at least.

If you want to be charitable you could credit him with being an excellent judge of character.
