I know that no backtracking is allowed between Continental US and Hawaii, but is a stopover okay? At present, none of the OW carriers fly between Hawaii and Asia. If I want to fly from HNL to HKG, I will technically need to get back to LA or SF before flying to Hong Kong. Am I correct here? Or can I use the JAL/AA codeshare flights from HNL to NRT?
Any advice will be appreciated...

As far as I understand the rules the only way to include Hawaii in a OWE is to add Australia to your continents and go HNL-SYD-Asia (or Africa).
this is a great question and one i have often pondered!! the rules do not seem to prohibit this as you are not "really" using the ticket to back track as you will purchase your own hnl - lax ticket, while using the 1 world ticket to go from lax - hnl with an open jaw to then take you lax - hkg. my guess is if you call enough of the carriers you may get what you want.
has anyone been succesful in what carfield proposes?

I asked the AA RTW desk this very question a few months ago, and had a long and complex discussion. Bottom line is that only one possible routing through Hawaii: SYD-HNL on QF and then you can use AA to go to the mainland (either eastbound or westbound). No open jaw or surface segment allowed. No creative alternatives -- they really don't want to include Hawaii on the NA segments. Absolutely not allowed to do DFW-HNL//LAX-HKG for example. When JL joins Oneworld this will get a lot better.

QF had LAX-HNL-SYD service for many years (and SFO-HNL-NAD-SYD before that), and YVR-HNL-SYD service (YVR-HNL was run with CP Air, not sure if all codeshared or a mixture). At this point zero chance of QF operating HNL to anywhere in North America.<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by JohnAx:

Apparently QF did have own metal service to Canada many years ago ('80s or earlier). In the '90s, QF changed to a partnership with CP where pax would connect in HNL (pre *A, NZ also did this connection with CP) and codeshared on each other's flights. When CP was acquired by AC, the partnership was dissolved. In Autumn 2000, QF started own-metal 763 service 3x weekly HNL-YYZ-HNL and 4x weekly HNL-YVR-HNL. The YYZ was dropped shortly after and YVR service was increased to 5x weekly. Apparently leisure fare made the bulk of this route (lots of Aussie skiiers) and QF ultimately dropped all own-metal service to Canada by June 2001. YVR is served by codeshare on AS and YYZ by codeshare on AA (bothout of LAX).<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by number_6:

A HNL stop only makes sense for routes to Canada (it's pretty much ont he SYD-YVR GC route). Unless Canada-Australia traffic picks up enough to support 2 carriers (QF and the surviving/present incumbent AC), I doubt if HNL-N. America will come back in the foreseeable future.<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">

Would a LGW-Antigua on BA, then Antigua-SJU on AA, then SJU-Hawaii then Hawaii back to LAX not count as a backtrack?</font>
That would be a back-track. You are not allowed to back-track to the continental US once you have arrived in HNL. You would have to fly London to Antigua then visit all of the places you want to visit in the continental US and then fly to Hawaii. Then, you would have to take the QF flight from HNL to SYD. Using this QF flight is the only way you can include Hawaii on a oneworld Explorer.<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by crankyusi:

I was under the impression that SJU is not part of continental US, and thus, SJU-HNL still means "continental US" hasn't been touched. The arrival into Los Angeles on the HNL-LAX is the first touch on "continental US", and then the remaining NA sectors could be used (#1 was Antigua-SJU, #2 was SJU-Hawaii, #3 was Hawaii-LAX). Thus, is SJU part of "continental US" or ??<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by leroy11:

I think you have a point. It all depends on how you define the continental US, and whether or not there is a direct flight HNL-SJU.<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by crankyusi:

If a HNL-SJU flight were to slip though the net, you would probably find any subsequent flight that lands anywhere east of Hawaii would be deemed a backtrack, and you'd be stuffed. You couldn't even finish your explorer off.
I agee with JohnAx. Hawaii might be great, but its full of beer-swilling tourists. There's other and better places that are easy to get to on an OWE.

On travel.com.au, the rules for the 4 continents fare did NOT state 'no backtracking between hawaii and US'. Because this is really only a guide, I contacted my TA who told me the rules appeared in the 4,5 & 6 continents fares.
Although whether SJU is part of the continental US is up for arguement.

SJU and even as far south as Trinidad and the the rest of the Caribbean are part of CONTINENTAL NORTH AMERICA as is Latin America/Mexico as far as the OWE fares are concerned.<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by goodo:
