this is a great question and one i have often pondered!! the rules do not seem to prohibit this as you are not "really" using the ticket to back track as you will purchase your own hnl - lax ticket, while using the 1 world ticket to go from lax - hnl with an open jaw to then take you lax - hkg. my guess is if you call enough of the carriers you may get what you want.
