I know that no backtracking is allowed between Continental US and Hawaii, but is a stopover okay? At present, none of the OW carriers fly between Hawaii and Asia. If I want to fly from HNL to HKG, I will technically need to get back to LA or SF before flying to Hong Kong. Am I correct here? Or can I use the JAL/AA codeshare flights from HNL to NRT?

Any advice will be appreciated...
