On travel.com.au, the rules for the 4 continents fare did NOT state 'no backtracking between hawaii and US'. Because this is really only a guide, I contacted my TA who told me the rules appeared in the 4,5 & 6 continents fares.

Although whether SJU is part of the continental US is up for arguement.
