I believe there is some law requiring that they allow people to pay to join, I wasn't aware that they couldn't give it out compliementary to people. If they had to charge to meet the law, they could just charge $1 since they are obviously allowed differential charging ( compare costs between regular, gold, platinum, exp )

I am dying laughing.
A law re AC memberships.
Right!!!
Same law that says you cannot get a full can of soda.
Same law that says you will pay 100.00 to go stand by on AA come Jan.1
Same law that says use it or lose on non ref tkts on AA.
Same law that requires management to mismanage their affairs so they can beg the US Congress for another bailout.
Same law that requires Advantage members to pay a fee for an award if not booked 21 days out.
Same law that requires AA to close a number of Admiral Clubs.
Same law that requires AA to close most of their city ticket offices.
same law that requires AA to remove waivers and favors.
Same law that requires AA to charge 20.00 dollars for a paper ticket.
Gotta love "the law"

Actually, as I understand it, the airlines were opening their clubs up only to elites and for free. They were then sued (I haven't been able to find out the details of the suit) and were forced to open their clubs up to anyone who could pay the membership fee.

In today's deregulated environment, anything goes, including complimentary club memberships.

Yup. IIRC the suit was brought by Ralph Nader in the late '60s or very early '70s. That was back in the days when the airlines were regulated and the CAB controlled routes and pricing. Club membership was looked upon as a discount for frequent travelers.

Please read the above, that was a case brought when the CAB was in existance.
Have your ever heard of the Delta Crown Room?
Platinum Medallion Comp membership, free booze all the time?
Re the insult, I was not going after you. I was going after the ignoranance that when something can't be logically explained , the typical comment is "there must be a law".
(an aside, many times this is true as lawmakers usually come up with the most unusual and counter-intuitive rulings)
In the case of the airlines, my comment was fueled by what you said, but driven towards airline employees/management who seem to have an imaginary lawbook at their sides.
Case in point, the earlier poster that said when he looked over the AC desk at the screen , the comment by the ACCSR was to basically back off because that was a security violation. Whereas that may be an over interpretation of the house rules (not being behind the desk) , TSA doesnt control the AC. We know the passenger was just trying to make sure that Cathay 2 letter code is not CP ,but CX.
It seems to me that when someone says there is a law against it or " it is against federal regulations" without being able to cite the specific reason, it makes them look lazy hiding behind an ignorance that relies on others to respect a "law" .
Reminds me of hearing a child say "why can't I do that" to their parental reply: "because I'm your mother".
Didn't mean to catch you completely with my flame. (just a cinge or two!)
Have a good one and glad you accepted my apology, as it is "the law"

My comment on believing that there was a legal reason was from having heard before that someone had taken them to court at some time and that they had been forced to allow paying members rather than a "theer must be a law". My belief is that AA like fleecing their members for an extra $250-$400 a year to have the same privileges that other OW members get for free.
