I'd say good news for those trying to avoid BA YQ.
Yes, this is good news
As soon as it starts showing in the online tool I will be comparing the cost of itineraries beginning JNB-MAD with itineraries beginning JNB-LHR.

QR is commencing daily DOH-SYD flights from the start of April 2016

(Cannot find an announcement on the QR web site, but the flights are showing in EF)

The flight is now selectable in the online tool and...
The total cost is very similar to that quoted by the tool if BA is the first carrier

I am currently working on an LONE6
If I start CPT-(BA)-LHR-(AA)-MIA... then the all-in cost of my itinerary is ZAR49,244
If I start JNB-(IB)-MAD-(AA)-MIA... then the all-in cost falls to ZAR48,891
So a difference of just ZAR353 which in the scheme of things is hardly worth bothering about.

It is quite relevant to those spending AAdvantage pesos, because there is a YQ surcharge for awards involving BA, and a much lower YQ for IB. Not so important for paid tickets.

Yes you are quite right

I was solely focussed on the possible YQ effect on paid tickets - specifically Oneworld Explorer tickets

But for AA award tickets the effect would be significant - pay the nominal YQ AA collects for IB flights vs the hefty YQ it collects for BA flights

Agreed, not so much price difference in that case. For RTW and such tickets I think the main benefit would be in opening up additional routing possibilities, e.g. for those who are tight on a segment limit or trying to keep under a Global Explorer tier.

More routing options on a RTW ticket can never be a bad thing

Very good news, as it adds more route options, the IB new J seems better than BA's J, and allows one to avoid the horror of LHR.

I guess the route is permanent, not seasonal? I'm looking to put together an ex-JNB DONEx that would start in January 2017, and EF timetable search shows the IB MAD-JNB flights only through October:

Results from ExpertFlyer.com
Code:
Flight Timetables Search:
Search MAD to JNB on 09/20/16 up to 7 days

Flight Stops Depart Arrive Aircraft

10 hrs 10 mins M,Th,F 08/01/16 10/28/16
But EF shows it operating in January:

I think it's probably just due to the clocks changing. You've got the timetable from 01Aug to 28Oct - but then the schedule then changes from 31Oct to 24Mar17:
Code:
TD21OCTMADJNB/AIB
** AMADEUS TIMETABLE - TD ** JNB JOHANNESBURG.ZA 21OCT16 28OCT16
 1 IB6051 145 MAD4S JNB 2345 0955+1 0 01AUG16 28OCT16 333 10:10

TD06NOVMADJNB/AIB
** AMADEUS TIMETABLE - TD ** JNB JOHANNESBURG.ZA 06NOV16 13NOV16
 1 IB6051 145 MAD4S JNB 2345 1055+1 0 31OCT16 24MAR17 333 10:10
Same days of week, same departure time, different arrival time.

Anyone here have any idea how much the savings is flying through MAD instead of LHR? Also checked bags. Do checked bags generally connect reliably at MAD?

Qatar Airways has confirmed it will begin a non-stop, more than 18 hour service between Doha and Auckland - set to become the world's longest flight - on December 3.
