No Meal Service?!

I understand that there's meal service b/w BOS and DTW, but why isn't there meal service b/w MHT and DTW? MHT is only 50 miles north of BOS!

Btw, what are the "meal" window times?

Just as an aside - I recently did a 5 segment MR between LGA and PHX. Due to the length and timing of the segments, I did not receive one meal in F.

There's no meal service between BOS and DTW (at least not on NWA!) only BOS and MSP.

Generally speaking, meals are served in FC on domestic flights with an actual flight time (takeoff to touchdown) over two hours. The published schedule lists block (or gate-to gate) times. The difference is tied to the amount of taxi time at each end. Subtract approximately 20-30 minutes (depending on the size of the airports involved) from the block time and you'll get a rough idea of the flight time. Clear as mud?

NWA tosses a wrench into the proceedings by scheduling meal service only during "traditional meal times", so a lot of the 2-4pm flights get beverages only. But not all...

So the short answer is check the website for your individual flight, because YMMV.

The OP thought there was service between BOS-DTW.

Reread.

I wonder how CO still offers some form of snack in all classes on mainline domestic service.

They own their own catering company.

I fly it all the time and there has never been a meal from MHT or BOS to DTW. The flight is only 1:15 in the air so there really would not even be time for a meal service. Just be glad they have not put a couple RJ's on these routes...they actually would be good RJ routes because they are such short flights.

It is something like:

6am-10am = Breakfast, 11am-2 = lunch, 4-8 or 9 = dinner

If your flight does not fall into those times then there will be no meal regardless of the lenth of flight. Usually you get a snack basket in FC on the off times..

Ahem... there was a time when such 'short' flights had full tray service. In fact quite a few flights in Europe still serve sandwiches and a few in Asia manage a warm meal service in flights of >60min in the air.

Yes, I fly LHR-DUB quiite often and (on BM anyway) you get a light, hot breakfast and a sandwich at lunch. It can be a race to eat with a short flikght like that...not so pleasant. I actually can do without the meal on the short hop because I am usually connecting to a meal flight so I pass anyway. With a flight like MHT - DTW you have a 15 minute climb-out and a 20 minute decent leaving 30-40 minutes "cruise time". A couple drinks and those world famous mixed nuts is fine for me...

Their snack in F in what they classify as "low yield markets" is less than NWA currently serves

Not that airline meals are that good, but the 1:15 in the air isn't a valid explanation when the European and Asian airlines can do it. I got a nice sandwich, chips, and soft drink on a PB Air flight from BKK to Lampang and the plane even stopped on the way.

At some point last year, they were CRJ flights to/from MHT. I will normally fly MSP-BOS and then MHT-MSP return and there is always a meal there, but only since April when they switched from CRJ to 320. MHT-MSP is nearly 3 full hours in the CRJ. I also flew DTW-MHT once and it was also a CRJ. So let's hope they don't switch back to that a/c on these routes.
