Of course this will depend somewhat on which ships are leaving when, but I won't know that until next year. Also I will need one-way airfare between OSL and KKN regardless of which direction I go, so that's not a factor. If you could give me any advice I'd really appreciate it!
M/S Finnmarken is for the season(2010) on a mission in Australia. I'm not sure how long she would be gone
Hi.
Northbound is to prefer for the reasons that are mentioned above.

I have been traveling more than 20 times on shorter trips on hutigruten for transport prupoes. All the ships generations considered, and I prefer the ship MS Finnmarken.
It is not really a ship that is in one generation.. It stand out, like MS Fram I would say(without been on MS Fram). IMHO it is the ship that are a looker, except the really old one.

If you have some questions, I would be happy to answer. Have a nice trip.

Get a car onboard for free, how do you get that?

If you are going to have a car onboard, remeber that they take your key, and maybe drive it on shore or move it. I don't like that, so I tell them to not do it.
They do not know how your car is operated, so if you are like me, tell them to call you if it is a problem on the car deck.

Many thanks!
Sorry, didn't see the thread was from '03.
The northen light is best seen in the winter months up north. If you really are a chaser, I would have put in some days at a hotel in a city up there.. Wich city comes to preference thing.. I would choose Troms. Great nightlife and it has also the best "city"experience up there. Alta is also a good option, it have more things to choose from, when it comes to wildlife.
If you don't care about citylife, then you are on the best place. Numerous of places to choose from. Just pick a place on the stop's on the hurtigruten.

Hurtigruten is not a internationally cruise per se. They are not making a profit, as far as i know.. so the government are chipping in.

The service is typical Norwegian: Don't think you are something..
I have had some bad experiences, and some good.
If you are paying for premium, don't expect better service than the cheapskate..

If you like some bad weather, the season jan-feb should be on your list.
In norwegian, but it should give you a good idea http://www1.nrk.no/nett-tv/indeks/58144
This clip is extreme, because the stabilizers didn't apply.

Sorry for my poor english.

MODS, Can I please ask how to see how recent/active a member is? I sent Dans6362 a genuine PM several weeks ago ABOUT THIS EXACT THREAD/TOPIC (as we are planing to visit the area) and there has been no reply. Is there a point at which you auto-notify posters that an account may no longer be "used". I would think an auto dormant/archive feature (notification) would be handy and functional! For example after six or twelve months of inactivity you check if they are still "interested" in flyertalk, and if not you notify with a symbol or some such and block quotes and replies to any of their inputs and/or PMs!?
Just as a courtesy/efficiency tool? I can imagine a LOT of threads would be streamlined by this!

I'm not sure just what your question is, but you might also want to browse over at CruiseCritic, on the Hurtigruten sub-forum:
https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=821

And also ask questions there, too, of course.

We are heading there next week, to do the RT Coastal Cruise, one that also has an "Astronomy Package" option available.

Similarly, there is the "cruise" section right here on FlyerTalk:
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cruises-179/

You should definitely ask your questions here. I did 3 segments on the Hurtigruten in the July of 2016.

I came south on Hurtigruten from Kirkenes to Trondheim. Then after two nights in Trondheim, I took the train from Trondheim to Dombs and on to ndalsnes on the Rauma Railway. Then after one night in ndalsnes, I took the bus to Geiranger, and the bus journey included a ferry crossing. Then after two nights in Geiranger, I went north on Hurtigruten to lesund. Then after spending two nights in lesund, I went south again on Hurtigruten to Bergen.

It seems like a convoluted way to get from Kirkenes to Bergen. However, it was carefully planned because I wanted to see specific things along the way, like:
  • The Rauma Railway from Dombs to ndalsnes
  • The Trollstgen road and rnesvingen road on the way from ndalsnes to Geiranger
  • The Geiranger Fjord on the way up from Geiranger to lesund

Not sure if your first sentence was directed to my comment directly above, but I certainly did not intend to suggest someone *not* asking questions here!

But there are other resources *also*, including one that is specifically related to cruises, with a sub-forum specifically about "Hurtigruten" cruises.
There are good resources here on FlyerTalk, but that doesn't mean one might not benefit from other resources, too.

Similarly, there is the "cruise" section right here on FlyerTalk:

There have been some recent discussions of Hurtigruten cruises.
