If it was me, I would take from LaGuardia Airport the New York Airport Service bus to 42nd street and Park Avenue. At the same location you can take the Olympic trails bus from there to Newark Airport. These buses are not transit buses, but motor coaches.

I believe the buses run every half hour to both locations and they park very close to each other near the Park Avenue overpass, so all you have to do is walk a few steps over the Newark bus.

I would avoid taking a cab, the bus to Newark airport goes through the Lincoln Tunnel and during afternoon rush hour one tube is dedicated for buses only, so in a cab you might be stuck in traffic while the buses zip right through the tunnel.

But if you take a yellow cab, since your destination is out of New York City, you can negotiate a fare to Newark. One caution, do not let the cab driver tell you he has to drive back to New York City empty and therefore tries to raise the fare on you to pay for his return trip. New York City yellow cabs are allowed to pick up fares at Newark Airport headed back to New York City, so all he will do is get in line to await a fare back to New York City. And the toll through the Lincoln Tunnel is one way going back to New York City which is $8.00, so do not let him charge you for the toll going to Newark, there is a toll through the Midtown Tunnel, which you will be charged for, pay no more than $6.50 for the toll.

Even though we've been getting some very helpful answers here, we're going to move this thread to our Regional Travel forum that covers NYC.

Thanks.

Your information about taking a yellow cab from NYC to EWR is incorrect. The fare is not negotiable; the meter must be used; roundtrip tolls must be paid; and a $15 surcharge is added. From the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission's website:

"For a trip to Newark Airport the fare is:

the amount shown on the taximeter using Rate Code 3 which includes a surcharge of $15.00; and all necessary tolls to and from the destination shall be paid by the passenger."

Yet another option is to take a taxi from LGA to Woodside Station (about a 15-minute drive); take the Long Island Rail Road from Woodside to Penn Station (a 10-minute ride); and then take NJ Transit from Penn Station to EWR (about a 25-minute ride, plus whatever it takes on the AirTrain to a terminal). On Friday night, there will be frequent service on both the LIRR leg, and the NJ Transit leg.

How about an express bus from LGA to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, then another express bus from the terminal out to EWR?

This should be the link to LGA Express Bus:
http://www.nyairportservice.com/

This should be the link to the EWR Express Bus:
http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.asp

Please note that I am posting this as a question, not as advice - as you would expect from someone with my FT user ID, I have never actually taken either bus myself and don't really know if this would work or not!

I think that the OP needs to tell us about her time between flights, budget concerns, and age (maturity level and the like). If money is not an issue I would settle for a car service the entire way. If money is a concern, then the Express bus to Express bus. If its someone that would be very comfortable using mass transit and has sufficient time, I'd say the Q33 to the E train to Penn Station and njtransit to the EWR airtrain.

What does "inexperienced" mean? Never having taken public transportation before? This is vague. Please elaborate on what you think are your friend's obstacles so we can better advise you. We can see some inexperience because planning one's itinerary to land in LGA and take off from EWR on the Friday evening of Independence Day weekend is something most would never do.

This is the best advice particularly because traffic will be horrible and a taxi will be excessively expensive. I just called Dial 7 which is one of the inexpensive car services. They charge $70 plus tolls (estimated by them to be ~$14) and then tip. Car service will be cheaper than taking a taxi especially since your friend will be sitting in traffic. In a taxi, the meter would continue running. Your friend might have to wait 15-20 minutes for the car to arrive and would need to meet the car outside on the island outside the doors of baggage claim. The car service could be stuck in traffic getting to the airport.

Thus given the traffic situation, guv1976's advice is one I would follow.

As other posters note, it would help to know further context, i.e. is this a connection, if so what are arrival and departure details into LGA and out of EWR respectively; could the traveller fly directly into EWR instead; can the traveller handle public transportation on her own or does she need hand-holding; is cost a factor?

I would not expect a very inexperienced traveller to make the LGA to EWR journey on her own. In that situation I would go to LGA to meet and escort her myself, if possible. But YMMV.

Ok, it's Friday, July 1. You asked us for advice and you got it.

So please let us know what your friend will do. And then let us know how it went!

I understand that the OP is new to FT but not to tell us what actually happened is frustrating. I took the time to help as did others here yet we don't hear back as to the results. I even PM'd the OP asking him to let us know what happened. That was 2 days ago.

To newbies and "oldies" alike, if you're going to ask for advice, please let us know what resulted. Thanks.

As I am sure you realize, you are preaching to the choir.^ I think dstan, when he gets back, should put up some kind of message saying this.

In the meantime, do you think we'll see #3000 this week?

That's right, he's on vacation. Good for him.

Depends if you think the week ends on Saturday or Sunday. Seriously, I think I am one of the few who is sick of this pursuit of 3000.

From LGA to EWR in 30 minutes!

Hi,

I found this forum as a result of my searching how to get from LGA to EWR on Sunday (yesterday). The replies seemed to me pretty complicated, so I just planned to take a cab and damn the cost...

However as I walked thru the baggage claim area towards the taxi stand, I saw the transportation desk which I think is operated by the airport. The woman there told me that there is a shuttle to EWR in 10 minutes which costs $32. I signed up on the spot, the http://www.etsairportshuttle.com was on time and together with 3 other people we made it to EWR in only 30 minutes!

Bear in mind that it was Sunday morning (the driver took the BQE, Manhattan Bridge and Holland Tunnel) so on weekdays it would probably take double or maybe more, but still a great deal. I got to EWR in comfort and in plenty of time for my flight.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
