First, you should post this on the Amweican forum. Seconf, go to Fewmilws web site and read and learn everything there is to know about your question. Third, yes, it exists and it works, assuming you understand and follow the rules.

Try FewMiles excellent site:

http://members.shaw.ca/fewmiles/AA/index2.html

The basic premise of the Challenge is for Gold, 5000 Q-Points in 90 days, and for Plat, 10000 Q-Points in 90 days.
I've done both.

As I replied to your backchannel by e-mail (but for the benefit of anyone else wondering):
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">For more info and the experiences of those who have
done it, just go to the American Airlines board on
Flyertalk and do a search for platinum challenge.
Lots of folks have completed it.

You don't go to the service center.. you need to call.
And if the person on the other end of the line isn't
knowledgeable, follow the old FT adage: hang up and
call back.

See for instance (just in the last month):

Keep in mind that it is based on Q points, not miles, so a discounted ticket in coach is 1/2 point per mile. Just made this mistake on my nephew'w ticket to Rome. Thought it would qualify him for Platinum because I thought the $1000 ticket had to be full fare. NOT. I called AA back and pursuaded them to give him Gold and 25% bonus miles on the return flight. He wasn't sure if he would be getting in enough flights to make Platinum.

Got it. AACustomer Service knew exactly what I was talking about and happily enrolled me in the Plat Challenge....although the Service Center here in MEX had no idea what I was talking about.....they said it "must be some special US offer," although she did spend quite a bit of time researching it.
FYI according to the agent I spoke with, fewer BA fare bases count towards the AAChallenge than do for normal AA accrual. Ill post the exact discounted BA economy fare bases in a bit.
